Don Coatney Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Don, I told my 4 grand kids that I would give them $50 if they could pass a 15 problem quiz. So far 3 out of the 4 have taken the challenge and are $50 richer. I told them to call me when they felt ready. I made up a random 15 problem test and gave it to them over the phone. Times table through 12. I, like you, feel it is invaluable. Also teaching them how to read a measuring tape. Bob . That is a very good idea. I may do the same Quote
Young Ed Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 That is a very good idea. I may do the same Don let me know when the test is ready. I promise not to use "the google" Quote

Dave72dt Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Around here they 've been teaching the kids to count on their fingers. As they get older I 've seen the kids bypassing the fingers and going directly to the answer so the memorization part still exists, just isn't promoted the way it used to be. Regardless of the methods , it still reverts back to the basic 3 R's. Quote
RobertKB Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Somethings you have to learn by rote. Multiplication tables is one. Some spelling and historical information are anothers. Nothing wrong with rote learning for some things. Quote
58prostreet Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 When my 3 daughters were in middle school and then in early high school, I made a deal with them. They got $50 for each A,$20 for each B, Nothing for C's and they paid me $20 for D's and $50 for F's.I did'nt pay out a fortune, but didn't make an money off of them. All in all it was a pretty good incentive. They all graduated from college and are doing fine now. Bob Quote
Jim Benjaminson Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I interviewed the "chrysler rep" from Cuba when he still owned the car. Not only does the car have an interesting history - but so did the owner. He managed to get the car out of Cuba on the last "free" ship that left the island - Castro had put a price on his head so getting out of Cuba was a must! Quote
