turtle47 Posted December 10, 2012 Report Posted December 10, 2012 I am in the process of putting the doghouse back on my car after a recent rebuild of the engine & trans . When I got to putting the hood on something doesn't look right , I'm thinking that maybe the hood hinge area on the hood is broke but I'm not sure . What I'm looking for a picture of the hood hinge area on the underside of the hood , mine has three notches in the bolt area and a rectangular piece of metal with the three holes for the hinge . When you assemble it the hood gets sandwiched between the plate & the hinge . I'm pretty sure this isn't right & it's some sort of repair but you never know . Thank you Quote

turtle47 Posted December 10, 2012 Author Report Posted December 10, 2012 Looking at the pictures it seems like I might be missing somthing , is there a brace that's spot welded or bolted to the hood ? I'm gonna have to figure out how to post pictures so I can show you what I have Chris Quote

The 'L' bracket should point away from the car. The hood sits on the bracket and bolts from underneath. _!---Hood---!_ Chet... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 10, 2012 Report Posted December 10, 2012 Not all P15s came with that hood brace. Not sure which years didn't have it. Mine and Don C's happened to come with them. And they do have the part of the hinge with holes provided to attach the brace. The others do not have that. The hood edge, where the captive nuts are located can break and may need to be welded. turtle47 Posted December 11, 2012 Author Report Posted December 11, 2012 mine is a 1947 p15 and if it's the hood brace im thinking about , i have it what doesnt look right on mine is where the hood bolts to the hinge . on the other hoods there seems to be a second piece of metal running along the hood line that has recessed holes for what i think are the hood bolts . mines just flat . chris Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 (edited) Hmmm........OK.........yours has the cross brace which is good......but the problem looks to be with the sides of the hood where the bolts are supposed to go. Some stuff is missing.....probably rusted loose. Is it still attached to the hinge? I'd go look at mine but the car isn't here. Can someone else explain to him what is missing....needed....to attach the hood? Edited December 11, 2012 by BobT-47P15 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Here's an exploded view of the hood from the Parts Manual.....but it doesn't show that area in question. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 There is a thicker piece that is supposed to be attached to the hood. Its not supposed to come off. I've got a great looking hood sitting in my possible scrap pile because of this same issue. Quote
mrwrstory Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Bob T's picture shows it. In your pic, it looks like the reinforcing plate that should be spot welded to the hood, has been separated from the hood flange and is still attached (see the bolts) to the hinge. turtle47 Posted December 11, 2012 Author Report Posted December 11, 2012 Mine doesn't have that piece on either side of the hood . What I have is a piece of metal about an 1/8" thick with the three holes for the hinge drilled into it , so the hood gets sandwiched between this plate and the hinge .it works kinda but when you close the hood the hinge bolt heads hit the top of the fender so I have to adjust the hinge but this creates a gap at the cowl . I guess they don't make this piece so I'm either gonna have to make one or scrap the hood . I noticed this when I was taking the dog house but forgot about it 2 or more years ago until now when I'm trying to put it back together Thanks. Chris Quote
Young Ed Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 (edited) I think what happened is that piece came off the hood and someone replaced it with just a flat piece. Your piece with the 3 bolt holes in it doesn't have the raised areas that it should have. You can see in Bobs pic that the proper piece forms little pockets to give the bolt heads room to clear the fenders. Edited December 11, 2012 by Young Ed Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 ah Ed...you taking the fun out of it... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 And, actually, it looks like the front end of my bolt holder strip is a bit loose. I think Dale commented on that sometime back. Presumably he can spot weld it back down. Quote
turtle47 Posted December 11, 2012 Author Report Posted December 11, 2012 Well , I'm gonna see what I can come up with as far as making one . Does anybody have any idea how long that strip is ? Quote
