Overdrive advice??????

I have a 1949 Dodge B1B108 with a stock 3 speed transmission with a floor shift. Are there any bolt on overdrive units that can be used with this transmission? If not, what are the other alteranatives available to me?

I'd be interested in what you find out. I've got a B2B with a three speed, fluid drive and 4:11 rear-end. I've heard that a pumpkin from a late '40's Chrysler will fit right in our trucks.

Back in 1980 we put a car rear axle in my 49' b1b. I don't remember exactly but I thought it was from a 1948 dodge or plymouth car. My truck would cruise down the road 70 miles an hour with my stock 3 speed floor shifter.

Lots of the car rear ends will fit in a 1/2 ton. 3/4 ton I'm not sure about. I've got a 3.90 from a 50 plymouth in my 46 pickup and a 3.73 from a 53 in my 48 plymouth club coupe.

I believe 1/2 and 3/4 ton truck axles are the same. I'm doing a trade with Normspeed for a 3.73 diff out of a 50 Plymouth that he has. I took the 4.10 diff out of my B2C parts truck and sent it out to him. On closer inspection Norm noticed that my diff has 16 tooth axle splines, which weren't used in the cars until '53. But since he wanted it as a spare for his '53 Suburban it will work for him. The diff that came out of the '50 Plymouth has 10 tooth splines. I'm not sure what axle spline is in my project truck, but I figure I can always swap out the side gears, or the ring & pinion to make a diff that'll work in my truck.

Merle you can certainly do that. Just make sure to check first! I learned that lesson the hard way when my axles wouldn't go back in. I have a 53-54 3.73 in the 4.10 housing from my 48 plymouth.

Charles, my parents just picked up a stock 48 Dodge convert last weekend.. I asked them how it went down the road (it has a 3 sp and flat 6).. they said it would do 65 no problem.. so maybe a car rearend is the way to go ??
