wayfarerstranger Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 pressing down on the gas pedal yields very little rise in speed, or if it feels like the engine isn't 'pulling what is causing this? if i press lightly / go easy on the pedal it slowly moves along and after i get up speed it seems o k . but like i said press down to hard on the pedal as shifting thru the gears and the car does not go any where just sits there engine revving / not pulling ? also when it does this it sounds like the carb is sucking a lot of air very noisy not normal at all.. this is a stock 54 230 3 spd . chopt50wgn Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 Sounds like the problem is in the bellhousing. Clutch and/or pressure plate could be on their last legs. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 if the clutch linkage is adjusted proper..then the odds are your disc is about gone..the sound of the carb sucking lots of air is just what it is doing at the higher revs..with the vehicle not accererting with the RPMs..just sounds funny is all...normally when you driving and shifting I know for certain you are yelling Wee Wee Weee!!! who could hear a sucking carb over that din Quote
Robert Horne Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 It does not take much oil on the clutch disc to make it start losing grip. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 Any strange or abnormal smell when this happens? Quote
greg g Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 To check the clutch, find a moderate hill. Climb it in high gear when climding, try to acceetlrate. Any slippage should be plainly evident. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted October 22, 2012 Author Report Posted October 22, 2012 (edited) that is what i really thought when it started this but it has only about 10,000 miles on it , so i`ll adjust it again if nothing happens i`ll replace it ....it doesn`t have any slippage it just isn`t engaging i guess that`s what made me think it could be something else .. i have one ready to go in , just don`t look forward to doing the swap out ..... thank for the feed back .... greg g Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 Splain how slippage and not engaging are disimilar terms please. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted October 23, 2012 Author Report Posted October 23, 2012 (edited) well slippage would be when YOU don`t pay attention and you slip down and bust your a** and not engaging would be what YOU are when you make smart a** comments on this forum ! greg g Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Hmmmm. Where I learned these things, I was told that a clutch that was not properly engaged would slip. Asin not fully transmitting the power from the flywheel to the transmission. If that is wise *** then blame my shop teacher. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted October 23, 2012 Author Report Posted October 23, 2012 some times a slipping clutch is very obvious and other times it isn`t which in this case it isn`t 100% obvious , especially with the low miles ? could be it isn`t worn out but covered in oil ? i had a car act like this once and it turned out to be a battery on it`s last leg`s ... so just checking to see if other owners have had similar problems and if so what was it ? before removing the transmission & bell housing which isn`t any fun ... Don Coatney Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 An oil soaked slipping clutch equates to a lot of stink and smoke. Do you have such symptoms? Quote
Robert Horne Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 A weak battery or charging system, loose conections can make a vehicle lose power. An exhaust problem, such as a collapsed muffler, or stuck heat riser, can make a vehicle lose power, especially going up hill. A dirty air filter, or fuel filter, fuel pump, a tight distributor, lots of possible things to check, that can give similar problems. Quote
1941Rick Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 When you say if you slowly accelerate its ok but when you put you foot into it it rev's up, it is a slipping clutch....nothing to do with a battery or generator. Engine revs...car does not move = clutch Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted October 23, 2012 Author Report Posted October 23, 2012 THANX for all the response`s .. Quote
