Who can repair the OD solenoid?

I read, that overdrive solenoid can be repaired - has anybody here experience on repairs?

Who & where do offer the service?

I have a defect one, it pulls when tested on table, but does not encage the OD.

Also burns the 30A fuse frequently.

The inside relay contacts are bad, the other even partly melted...

Can it be repaired?

(New 6V solenoid price is 265,-)

I am sure that someone in Sweden will be to able since Volvo used so many Overdrives. Do you have an old car monthly similar to our Hemming's that list services? The solenoid service you inquire about is available in the U.S. from one on the repair shops that advertizes in Hemmings but the cost for shipping would be much higher than finding a rebuilder in Europe.

James,

I have not spotted such service at our magazines in Finland, but just posted the same question in the biggest classic car web forum site of Finland. Waiting for response.

I know Volvo offered OD as option, but for some reason OD Volvos are rare birds in Finland. The other thing is, that customer potential for veteran cars parts repair is tiny small in Finland compared to USA, thus we do not see shops specialised in repairs. As you know, no-one repairs the modern car parts. If you take a car with defect starter to a mechanics shop, they will replace the entire starter motor rather than replace bearing or bushings...

Thus number of people who know how is rapidly decreasing.

One alternative for me, however, is the occasional (1-3/year) business trips to US. I may take my solenoid there with me and ask the service shop to send it to our subsidiary in S-C. Pick it up there the next time I visit US. Time consuming and complicated, yes, but gives me possibility to obtain impossible parts at reasonable cost.

while not an OD solenoid I have rewound a solenoid in my past that was unattainable at the time...I uncoiled it, measured the length of wire and the gauge..got new coated copper wire and spooled it onto the body..it worked for a number of years, actually still working actually when I removed the old fuel oil heater and replaced it with central heat and air..

Pekka - Too bad you didn't know earlier, I could have brought it back with me! Might not be of interest to the crown on here, but I would like to have the link to Finlands classic car forum. Would be cool to follow the happenings over there.

It crossed my mind as well, my friend... C'est la vie!

OT: Here's the link: (Funny co-incidence, the name of the forum is "Overdrive")

- this forum is 80% focused on American cars

The other forum is for the Finnish association of veteran car owners:

For the price you have quoted for a new sol. I would buy the new one. You are going to spend just about that much on a repair anyway. In the end you will still have an old sol. All sorts of things can go wrong when shipping from one side of the world to the other.
