Jim Shepard Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 I'm thinking about going to a 12V conversion but don't want to use the usual GM one-wire setup. Dose anyone have a digram of the MOPAR alternator setup? Is it a one-wire? Internal or external regulator? Any years better than others? Thanks... Quote
Don Boger Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 Jim, I have a sketch that Ez Wire included for mopar's. I will get pic in a little bit and post it for you if you like. Quote

MBF Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 I used a GM internally regulated alternator on both my truck and 36 Plymouth. I can take a picture of the wiring if that will help. Mike Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 I vote GM 1 wire too... So easy to set up 1 main heavy lead wire from stud terminal to battery, one small clip in wire that has power only with the key on. Mount and finished Quote
48Dodger Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 The later 12 volt system is what I use on the Bonneville Truck. 1972...orange box. 48D Quote
Scruffy49 Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 Don't use the old style round case alternator. I have one on my 69 Dodge truck, getting hard to find. Took me 3 months to get a replacement, local alternator/starter shops wouldn't touch it. Surprisingly enough though the original voltage regulator is still good. You might want to check the electrical section at Sweptline.org for other good choices. Some of the later mini alternators have been used there on slant 6 and V8 engines. I've got a 12v generator on my project 230. Haven't decided yet on using it or an alternator. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 I vote GM 1 wire too... So easy to set up 1 main heavy lead wire from stud terminal to battery, one small clip in wire that has power only with the key on.Mount and finished That makes 2 wires... So why is it called a "1 wire" alternator? Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 I believe it's something to do with the 1 charging wire, that's just what I've always known them to be referred too. Easy to find anywhere, easy to have rebuilt and if your going chrome their all over the performance shops Quote

I did the GM easy way (although its 6V). Now I want to do MOPAR. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 Lol, I'm sorry my friend but to me your going fom the stanley hammer back to the pointy rock, but to each his own. Quote
Dave72dt Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 I like the MOPAR setup. It's a simple setup and a bolt on for those of us with Mopar V8 conversions. I've done the self exciting GM's and have had less than steller experiences with them. JMO but those open framed MOPAR alts look really good to me after all the humdrum GM's. Quote
