I need help. I have the 218 and the oil pump is leaking out of the flat plate. Thee gasket is cracked. I have tried making one, using o rings and nothing stops the leak. I cannot find anyone who has the gasket alone without buying a rebuild kit. Does anyone know of a vendor that sells them? Has anyone made their own?

On the earlier vehicles the cover gasket is paper (Same gasket on Plymouth from the late 1930 four cylinder engine through the 1942 218 cu. in. 6). Looks like they changed things up in 1946 so I don't know if your 218 has paper or O-ring.

And on the car side for P15 they list two different cover gaskets based on engine number even though they only list one body and one cover. The two number are 863724 (early) and 1124984 (late). Unfortunately I don't have a cross reference for those.

I don't see a listing for just that gasket from the vendors I normally check either.

Sorry but I did try...

Use the search function, this was discussed a while back and I recall that someone had a source for the cover o-rings. I replaced mine, but I was able to browse the o-ring stock in our parts department until I found one close enough to work. (I work at a construction equipment dealership)

If your pump used an o-ring and you put a paper gasket in there you will have too much clearance for the gears and it won't pump oil. Once you find a replacement o-ring, I highly recommend that you fill the pump gears with light grease, such as Lubriplate Assembly Lube, before reinstalling the cover. Otherwise the pump will be empty and won't draw up oil from the sump. If you can fill the voids around the gears it will begin pumping right away, and the light assembly lube will dissapate into the oil.

Excellant advice Mearl! Thanks for posting.... Clearance in this area is as critical as engine bearing clearance. Too much or not enough clearance will effect oil flow and pressure as well as engine bearing life.
