Young Ed Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 My choke cable won't go quite all the way in. Call me anal but when I'm driving I really would like the knob to push flush against the bezel. I had this issue before I pulled my car apart and last night when putting the cable back on it came back. I spent about an hour trying to adjust it out and no matter what position the cable or sheath was in it won't quite push all the way in. If I go under the hood I can pull it the last little bit. My 46 pickup is the same way. Anyone got a trick??? Quote
greg g Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 I have a similar condition but mine is related to the repositioning of the carb closer to the firewall due to its position on the dual manifold. I have adjusted it a couple of times but it seems to alway revert to the positioin where the knob does not return to the fully closed position. I think mine is related to the fact that I pulled the cable back through the firewall to accomodate what should actually be a shortened length. But disconect the cable from the choke linkage then push the knob into the closed stop, then adjust the sheath so there is about 3/8's in extending beyound the clamp and tighten the clamp down, Then fully open the choke butterfly, and tighten the screw i the choke linkag clamp. Now pull the knob and check to see that the butterfly is closed. If it needs adjustment do it by loosenning the sheath clamp and moving it ti the choke is fully closed, the retighten. Then push the knob in and assure the butterfly is in its full open position. Quote
JBNeal Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 there's a kink in yer cable somewhar and it's acting like a spring, probably near the firewall clamp. I recall years ago that my choke cable sheath popped out of the bracket under the dash, and taking the whole thing apart I found the cable to be sticky with crud and a kink about halfway down its length. As the truck hadn't run in 20+ yrs, I cleaned the cable real good, flattened the kink out, re-crimped the sheath and re-installed...problem solved Quote
Young Ed Posted June 1, 2012 Author Report Posted June 1, 2012 You bring up a good point. I think this trouble started when I put the dual heater fresh air box back in. I attributed it to the fact that I had to disconnect and reconnect the choke but perhaps I really need to reroute the cable. The cars don't have a firewall clamp they have a rubber grommet with a clamp around the outside of that. My truck the cable is repaired with a lawnmower choke cable so that one could have any of the above issues. Quote
claybill Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 somewhere in your system the cable friction is stronger than the return lever (spring). i had it too.......i took it all apart and reaassembled it and it was ok. bill Quote
