albolton Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 2 " of shock travel when on an angle gives you more axle travel than when the shock is vertical. To find out how much, collapse the shock, run a vertical line from the lower shock mount up and find the point the centers would intersect. you are one smart man Quote
pflaming Posted May 10, 2012 Author Report Posted May 10, 2012 (edited) Dave: I've understood that a shock is there to quickly stop up and down motion. If a shock is vertical (45 - 90 degrees) to the axle I can see where it would work, but if it is say 22.5 degress or less, wouldn't its effectiveness for vertical bounce be greatly reduced? This is my old shock, quick paint to see it. It gets more horizontal when the truck is on the wheel. Looks like the angle is not as severe from the side as from the bottom on my back. I would think so but I'm no expert on shock dynamics. I would think it would give you a softer, more comfortable ride than the more vertical mounting. Quote
pflaming Posted May 21, 2012 Author Report Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) Today up and back in the alley, tomorrow around the block. I am more than amazed at how easy it steers with the new king pins, even with these old tires. Well, it's all back together. Oil pressue: 40+ lbs.; idling temp w/o a rad cap @ 160 degrees (Keven, the temp gauge works!) The two pics are before and after the suspension work. I don't think the pictures are all that telling. I have a clean gas tank, so I'm still on an aux tank. Don't want old gas in a shiny tank. To do: install and bleed the brakes. Waiting for tubing. Budstruck, I still haven't won so you're still on! But I'm feeling alot better about this project. Edited April 5, 2018 by pflaming Quote

HanksB3B Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) Congratulations. Don't mean to rain on your parade but before you go around the block I suggest you get a new windshield before this guy: Gets this guy: To give you a ticket that'll set you back the price of glass and three window installs. Especially if he's in a bad mood. Hank P.S. In case anyone hasn't noticed, Cities are making up for their deficits and defunct budgets and lack of Federal Funding these days by traffic ticket quotas and increased fines. If you haven't gotten a ticket lately (I haven't knock on wood) don't be unpleasantly surprised! Edited May 22, 2012 by HanksB3B Quote

pflaming Posted February 26, 2013 Author Report Posted February 26, 2013 (edited) New dimensions with 15" rims and after driving it about 30 miles on various surfaces Tires are 235 / 75 / R15 Goodyear Wrangler. I took these off my S 10 4X4 so the tread is aggressive. I will get less aggressive tread whenever. While it sits lower, it still looks natural which I like. Would like to put it along side a stock spring B3B. BEFORE removing one leaf per spring NOW Wheel base = 108" / three speed tranny / stock 16" wheels 15" rims 235/75/15R Center of front bumper = 20" 18 3/4"Center of bed floor 25 Center of the bottom of the end bed frame = 21" 19" Outside to outside dimension of the front tires = 68 1/4"Outside to outside dimension of the rear tires = 69 5/8" The pics below are the same truck, same paint, just cleaned. I'm just amazed. The result if far beyond my expectations, I just got lucky. Edited February 27, 2013 by pflaming Quote

pflaming Posted July 12, 2014 Author Report Posted July 12, 2014 Someone was inquiring about a way to increase top speed. This puts me at an easy 65. I can travel with the trucks and pass them with ease. Sorta forgot how much I did . Well worth the work. Quote
