central52 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Horn doesn't blow, so I want to get at the inside of the works on steering wheel, but I can't pry off the hub cover. It won't budge. The service manual says, "pry the hub cover upwards". With what, a jackhammer? Help. Ed Quote
Young Ed Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 (edited) Do you have a deluxe or special deluxe? The special deluxe horn ring and cover is removed by screws from the backside of the steering wheel. Here's my special deluxe steering wheel you can see the holes for the cover. There are 3 for the T shaped piece that are indented into the wheel and then it uses I believe 4 of the other holes. Not sure what the other ones are for. Edited March 19, 2012 by Young Ed Quote
old rat 49 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 (edited) Check for bad or broken wire coming out of lower end of steering column. Also hot wire horns to make sure they are working. Had both problems with mine. Edited March 19, 2012 by old rat 49 Quote
central52 Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Thanks guys for both suggestions. I have the Special Deluxe. I'm going to go out later and check them. Ed Quote
desoto1939 Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 The three inner holes are used with the Mopar steering wheel remover tool the bolts tread into these holes and the you use the push both to remove the wheel from the shaft. Some of the other holes are used to hold the brass clip that holds the spring a wire that goes down the steering tube. I have the Miller Steering wheel puller for these wheel if you would like to see a picture. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
Bingster Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Yes, I'd like to see a picture. Is there any other steering wheel remover that can be used or is it just the special tool? And Rich, do you rent this, too? Quote
Young Ed Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Unlike the brake tools the steering wheel puller is fairly standard and went on for a long time. Imagine a Y with three slotted bolt holes and a center shaft to push on the column. Now Rich do you have the puller for the earlier cars and trucks that didn't come with those convenient bolt holes? Rusty O'Toole Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 To pry up the horn button I use a couple of putty knives or thin scrapers. Go easy or you will damage it. You could first check the horn wire where it comes out the bottom of the steering column. Is it plugged in? Can you hook up a test light and see if it grounds when you push the button like it is supposed to? That is about all it can do, if it makes contact and is not shorted out the trouble must be elsewhere. O ya you can do the same tests at the horn relay. If the button is not working check the wire to the steering column. Quote

central52 Posted March 20, 2012 Author Report Posted March 20, 2012 How does the horn actually work? With that center wire that comes up thru the shaft thru the T fixture? Ed Quote
Young Ed Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 How does the horn actually work? With that center wire that comes up thru the shaft thru the T fixture? Ed Yes the horn ring contacts that wire and creates a ground. Quote
central52 Posted March 21, 2012 Author Report Posted March 21, 2012 O.K. Got the horn to blow. Yes, it was a disconnected wire down below where it comes out of the steering column. Thanks to everyone for their input. Happy motoring. Ed Quote
