supertweet Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 just cam and valves left in block, have valve spring compressor, what's the manouver to remove valves? undoing the 3/8" nut all the way snugs it up to the spring assembly-frustrating...thx,Dave. Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 The valve spring needs to be compressed to release the valve keepers. They're a pair of tapered pieces that wrap around the valve stem. Once they're out, release and remove the spring compressor. extract the valve. The 3/8 nut adjusts the clearance between the tappet and valve. Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 To continue Dave's thoughts- the valve spring compressor pushes up the spring, a magnet helps remove the keepers. Once you release the compressor you can remove the valve and spring. Put each assembly in a ziplock bag and mark its location. With all the valves out you can lift the lifters up. Clothes pins can be used to hold them up. With the lifters out of the way you can remove the camshaft from the front of the engine. Be careful not to scratch the cam bearings with the cams. Sometimes you have to turn the camshaft to get it to clear. When you take out the lifters mark them or keep them in order, they should go back on the same cams. They are broken in to each other, if you mix them up it can cause them to wear out in a short time. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 For Dads IH engine we rebuilt I took a scrap of 2x4 and drilled holes for the valve stems and used a spade bit to make holes to hold the lifters. Quote
supertweet Posted March 16, 2012 Author Report Posted March 16, 2012 ah the keepers, thanks, that was pestering. will remove and store as per instructed, next move collect parts and a bit of loot, then we'll put er back together. cheers, dave. Quote
pflaming Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 I have a small strong magnet, about the size of a pencil, on an 18" spring stem. It was very helpful in taking out those 'keepers'. They are small, slippery, and shoot like a bullet. I released the valve stem then pulled them out with the magnet. Quote
austinsailor Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 two thoughts, more applicable if the motor is still in the car. First, block the 3 oil return holes before starting. Keepers will end up in the pan if you don't. Second, raise the spring just a bit, knock the valve down free of the keepers, then raise the spring the rest of the way. If you raise it all the way, then tap the valve free, there is no telling where the keepers will end up. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 When the time comes to reinstall the keepers apply grease to the inside of the keepers and they will then stick to the valve stem as you release the spring. Quote
