knighthawk Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 any one here ever haul car inside a truck, such as a U-Haul ? Can I secure the car enough ? Do they have wood floors, or metal ? How can I Install some tie-downs ? I need to haul one and tow one.........thanks Quote
PatS.... Posted March 9, 2012 Report Posted March 9, 2012 Whatever you do, don't tell U-Haul what your plans are...they will say not allowed no matter what it is you plan to do. Quote
Robert Horne Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 The dirt track race cars are hauled inside trucks, no problem. They build ramps inside to get the cars up over the wheel wells. Quote
Robert Horne Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Often I see on I-81 south bound, cars or small trucks are towing a car with a tow bar, and the towed car has a tow bar with another car attached to it.,,,look out no brakes, Quote
greg g Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Years ago our next door neighboor loaded his Austin America into the back of a U haul, then loaded the rest of his stuff around it and moved to Va. Loading looked very perilous via wooden planks and concrete blocks. He put a couple tires between the bumper and the wall then cranked on some pressure against the front wall of the truck with some big ratchet straps. Never heard from him again so I can not comment onthe success of the trip. Quote
knighthawk Posted March 10, 2012 Author Report Posted March 10, 2012 I forgot about the wheel wells !!!!! Do all these type trucks have wheel wells in side the box ?????? Quote
Eneto-55 Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 I thought of doing this as well, but look at the specs on the height of the bed (floor) in those trucks - it's pretty high. I didn't get as far as looking inside one, to see the height and width of the wheel wells. Neto Quote
austinsailor Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Wheel wells vary from truck to truck, but if it has some that are in the way you could always build it up with planks to be level. Quote
aero3113 Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Just don't do this http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=-u42E_ODS8Q Quote

Don Coatney Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Try this That worked. However the scenery is much better in this one. Quote
Big_John Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 My two cents.. First, Uhaul, Ryder etc. doesn't let you do this. Something happens and the truck gets damaged and you'll be on the hook for the damages. BTW, buy the insurance... Your credit card doesn't cover collision damages on a rental truck like it does on a rental car. I found this out the hard (and expensive) way. Second, I've never seen a good makeshift way of loading and unloading a car from a truck. Yes, it can be done, racers do it all the time, but you really need to do it the right way with some good, strong ramps. I've seen it done best by load/unloading to a loading dock. Of course, then you have to get the car down from the dock. Rent a Uhaul trailer. If you don't have a truck, rent one of their small ones. The trailer will be the easiest and safest way.... probably the cheapest in the long run. Quote
knighthawk Posted March 10, 2012 Author Report Posted March 10, 2012 yeah, I hate doing something haft as-ed, with my luck, always the worst will happen, especially when I got lot money invested the car(s). Plus, I may have to move 3, maybe four cars. I think I'll go with a commercial hauler.........thanks guys ! that why I ask it here ! Quote
Captain Neon Posted March 13, 2012 Report Posted March 13, 2012 When we moved from Colorado to Missouri, I made three one-way trips, and flew back to Colorado. I parked my P15 at my brother's house, and the other two cars were parked at the aerodrome until my wife and I could retrieve them. I got on a first name basis with my Southwest flight attendant after that many trips in such a short period of time. Quote
dezeldoc Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Look around town and find someone who has a 3 or 4 car hauler and see if you can strike up a deal. if i had a tow going back that way i would be glad to do it for ya, i can haul 3 with the trailer i have now, i sold the 4 car a few years back.
