Greg F Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Fifteen months and a ton of help from all of you and she is drivin round the block. Have to start her off in second as first and rev don't work. Also due to bad bleed job, brakes are not too good. Thanks again for all the help...GREG Sorry can't figure out how to post video...Greg Quote
hkestes41 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Greg, Your lack of first / reverse is most likely a result of poor adjustment of the linkage. The manuals will give the proper procedure for the adjustment. If you don't have a manual and want me to scan the procedure for you let me know. Quote
old rat 49 Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Feels great doesn't it. Just got there myself. Enjoy. Quote
1941Rick Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Like hkestes41 says, your linkage is most likely out of adjustment...To much slack not pulling the shift lever to the Forward and Reverse position......simple adjustment to make... Always brings a smile to your face when all you hard work comes to fruition....) Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 I can still see the big grin through the window..... Congrats!! Quote
Greg F Posted February 25, 2012 Author Report Posted February 25, 2012 Tried to move the gearshift selector forward with my hand while the wife shifted, but did not seem to work. The manual is kind of confusing on adjusting the linkage but I have been looking at the former posts on this website. Also, have new 12 volt gen and voltage regulator, but doesn't seem to be charging. At what speed should I see charging, or should it should a charge, just reving the motor. Hopefully little problems I can get worked out over the next few weeks, so I can drive her on the real roads. Thx Greg Quote
pflaming Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 I had the identical shifting problem. I cleaned and lubed the mechanism and it all worked. I didn't have to adjust anything. Congradulations. It's the first rite of passage. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 First drive is a once in a lifetime thing. I will never forget my first drive. Quote
Greg F Posted February 25, 2012 Author Report Posted February 25, 2012 pf, which parts did you clean and lube exactly? The actual lever in the tranny or the linkage from the shifter. The manual seems vague to me, maybe just need to re-read. Would be nice to go backwards, but for now alot of cul-de-sacs for the u-turn...hehe Quote
Darbone85737 Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Congratulations ! Nothing more thrilling or anxiety generating than that first ride. I haven't had an old car in a while but I have been rebuilding old motorcycles. I use the "increasing radius" method of initiation for confidence building. Each outing is for a slightly large radius from the home making sure the wife has cell phone and keys to pickup with ramp in back. After a couple of hundred miles I feel safe to wander further afield but keep my tools handy. I recenty bought a 1949 Plymouth sedan that hadn't been really driven in a while. After getting it home I drove around the neighborhood a bit and marvelled at the smooth running engine. I sat in the drive with it running for a while just soaking in teh sound, sight and smell. After 3 or 4 minutes it died and wouldn't restart. The drive is inclined and it ran out of gas due to a weak fuel pump. My problem is once I start taking things apart it's hard to know where to stop .... anyway.... Congratulations again Quote
Mark Haymond Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Ah, yes, enjoy the magic. Quote
pflaming Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 AAJET: The linkage. I have a 3 on the tree truck, but I think they are very similiar if not the same. That linkage seems to like to be very free for the movement required. So I cleaned it then dried it so it would not gather too much dust and dirt and every thing worked. I'm not on the road yet but can run the gears on the blocks. Good luck Quote
White Spyder Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 Nothing like that sound of when they first fire up. Congrats. Quote
