Californian Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 My friend has a 48 P15 two door sedan and his head light door is not lineing up with the fender molding and the top grille bar... His headlight door is off by almost 1/2". Does anyone know was there more than one headlight door for the P15's... Tom (12) Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 I presume you're speaking of the stainless steel trim ring that goes aroound the outside of the light?? There is, I believe, both a right and a left ring. Perhaps he has two of the same side???? Just guessing. Or......his fender trim could be too high up......it originally was offset towards the bottom of the car by use of some off center trim clips. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 good call on the fender clip orientation but does not explain the grille alignment..there are two designs of doors....they are not reversable do to the size of the trim opening where the grille and fender trim tucks in.. ...BUT..to my knowledge it is only in the base design and nothing to do with the trim openings in the door...I have a set of each at home..if I remember can look at this for certain.. Niel Hoback Posted January 27, 2012 Report Posted January 27, 2012 I think the only difference is the early 46 rim has the outer edge bead rolled under and all the others are pressed out flat to the fender. It should make no difference as far as mounting. It does sound like the right and left are different and won't swap. Quote
Californian Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 Tim, We know there is a left and right, it seems maybe the 46 door is the different one? My friends 48 has a hole for the bottom screw and a catch at the top and... his headlight door has three squares and the headlight bucket has one square at the bottom for indexing the headlight door to the bucket...The doors my friend has are the flat edge and we would like to here more about the rolled edge...If you could check your doors it would be appricated... Thank you all for the info, Tom (12) good call on the fender clip orientation but does not explain the grille alignment..there are two designs of doors....they are not reversable do to the size of the trim opening where the grille and fender trim tucks in.. ...BUT..to my knowledge it is only in the base design and nothing to do with the trim openings in the door...I have a set of each at home..if I remember can look at this for certain.. Plymouthy Adams Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 (edited) your description has me a bit confused...both design of the doors have three mounting holes, the basic difference is only the lip of the door as it flushes to the fender...one is flat..the other is tucked under and a bit more of streamlined look...I am now curious to know if you have the correct door/bucket on the one side...the later model buckets are of the design to have a slot at the top to slip the clip on the door and only one mounting hole at the bottom..without a picture of what your friend has it will be only a guessing game to what the source may be from.... here are the two styles of doors..pay close attention to the fact that other than the rolled lip the other features are identical to each other... so if there is a further question here, post a picture to give us all a view of what you have to work with here...otherwise its as I said, a guessing game.. steveplym Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I had the same problem on my car. If I remember correctly I was able to buy a correct one from shell that would match the drivers side. If you see these pics below the drivers side here has the edges rolled and the passenger side the edges (where it sits on the fender) are more flat. The headlight ring will not sit right against the trim piece. I think the difference was 1946 used a different one than 47-48. Seems like I started a thread about this a few years ago. I will search and see if I can find it. Quote
steveplym Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Yep found it. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=10886 Frank M confirmed in this thread that '46 used the one on the left and 47-48 used the one on the right side. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 On my 1948 P-15 both the right and left look like this one. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 48 left side, the notches are definitely not lined up opposite each other. Right side the same. Meaning they don't swap sides. Also the notches are not the same size, so I don't really think they could be swapped without severe misalignment. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 3, 2012 Report Posted February 3, 2012 new twist...came across a set of door, these headlight doors look identical in all aspect except.....there is no large notch cut for the trim..now just what puppy are these for...42 maybe???????? someone throw the forum a bone..or at least this ole boy.. saw these at the swap meet today..could have got the pair for 5.00...passed on them as I have no use for them..and...had no idea the exact model they are for... Californian Posted February 11, 2012 Author Report Posted February 11, 2012 Just getting back on this headlight door thread...My friends headlight bucket is the one with the slot on the top and the hold down screw at the bottom, He has been able to make some adjustments to the fender molding and the and the top grille bar, I belive he used the mopar clip and some aftermarket clips to mount the fender moulding,he has had this 48 Two Door Sedan for over thirty years and almost every piece of exteior mouldings had to be found.... One thing he needs is a door arm rest and a right side rear arm rest...
