Guest P15-D24 Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Anybody done this? Can't get a puller on it. Nothing specific in the manual on R & R. Pickle fork the right tool? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 You need the correct tie rod puller. A pickle fork ruins the rubber cup and can damage the steering gear worm and roller if you hammer the wrong way on the pitman arm. Quote
pflaming Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Mine was tight also, I put a jack under the steering arm so it was solid to the concrete floor, then with the nut on I gave it a good rap with a good hammer and it coorperated. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 I agree with Dodgeb4ya. I bought an OTC tie front end puller kit that includes the puller that he shows. It works great. I got the kit for under $100 from ToolTopia.com I also like this one from the kit. I used it for many of my tie rod ends. Quote
DollyDodge Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Wish I had seen this link beforelast week. Iused a pickle fork, it worked ok, butaaruined the rubber Dae,a though I do have replacements from Roberts. I used a three prong gear puller to take off the steering box and that went well. Quote

austinsailor Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 An old man in a junk yard in Augsburg, Germany showed me how back in the 70's. Loosen the nut.Take 2 two lb hammers, hold on on one side of the arm as backing, smack it on the other side. A couple wacks will pop it right out. Doesn't damage the seal, it's quicker than pullers and no special tool needed. I've removed maybe 50 or 60 that way, never had one that wouldn't come off. Never damages a seal. Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 It"s the butcher way too. Not saying I have never done it in my more careless years! Tie rod ends not so much of a big deal because of the hammer angle. Pitman arm on the steering gear-well a whole different story. Did the hammer shock job on a Linclon pitman arm and the steering gear had a slight bump in it afterward. I had to replace it-for free. Quote
Guest P15-D24 Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Tie rod puller was delivered today, replaced the drag like in less than two minutes. Right tool makes all the difference. Quote
austinsailor Posted January 11, 2012 Report Posted January 11, 2012 Gutleut Kaserne near the Bahnhof (train station) in downtown Frankfurt, '66-'67, Augsburg '72 - '75. Traveled from Rome to just south of the Arctic circle in old worn out VW's, visited more than 15 countries. Some, like Andorra, I didn't even know existed until we ran across them. All on $100 a month. Quote
