Where is the cheapest place to buy Smithy's mufflers....

Have been checking the various websites on the internet. They vary from $24.95 to one place that wanted $95 each. Mainly in the high 20s to mid 30s. I think I would like the middle of the 3 sizes, the 26 inch. Can't locate any local source for those mufflers so far.

Have been thinking of experimenting with some different configurations of pipes. Since I don't have a manifold split yet, may try the old two pipes off of one header first. Some older guys say they did this years back and it sounded fairly good. Even before that, may just have the right one put on in place of the current muffler, just to see what one only will do. That will give the muffler guy some job security for a little while.

Bob,

Mid 20's to about $30 is about right. Who ever that is selling them for $95 must like looking at them. Based on his price he's not going to get many takers. The price range I gave is about the normal price, depending on size of the muffler.

I ran a single Cherry Bomb glasspack for a while, but my old motor was pretty tired and it didn't sound that great. Once I installed the Cherry Bomb I wished I had left the nice quiet old muffler in there. You could try patching in a length of straight pipe where the muffler goes. Plenty of rap when you do that.

Well said Norm. I've had the Smithy on my coupe since 1995. I'm sort of hoping it will give out soon so I can put a quiet muffler on it.

Was my exhaust too loud? I have dual Smithys.

Bob;

Buy from the best internet low price and split your manifold. Trust me you will like it.

I just put a 20 " Cherry Bomb on my 38 w/230 as a tempory measure until I install my split exhaust. The old system was ahangin and aclangin. I just ended the pipe in front of the rear tire. I love the sound but I've noticed I'm saying WHAT??? more lately. ;) $17.00 at NAPA.MVC-003F.jpg

You know what they say Norm. Sell 50 at a dollar profit or 1 at a 50 dollar profit.

Don,

Your pipes sounded ok and so does mine. However, I just want to return to the quiet sound in my own car now. Remember I don't even play the radio in a car. So when my Smithy dies I'll replace it with a quiet muffler. When I was under the car for some reason last summer, it looks like it may be awhile before it needs changing though. It wasn't very rusty and it'll be 12 years old sometime this summer.

You have a working radio in your car?

Don,

I have a radio in the P15 but it doesn't work. In fact I took it out again a few weeks ago when I rewired the fuel gauge. Left it out and it's going to stay out now. A few days after that I made a trade for a dummy radio head to fill up the hole in the dash. So it will look like the radio is there, yet I'll have lots of room under the dash. I got tired of taking it out everytime I want to work under that dash. It's too big and you can't work under the dash with it in there. I had already taken the speaker out over a year ago and left it out for the same reason. Haven't actually picked up the radio head yet because the guy who has it has to dig it out. No hurry though. At least the deal is sealed.

I'm keeping the old radio and speaker though. When I said I don't play the radio in the car, I was talking about my modern cars.

You can hear a little bit of how his 26" Smithys sound in this video made during a ride in the race car in June of '06. Norm (Norm's Coupe), his wife Mary, and I are in the back seat, Cruising in Murphreesboro.
