ggdad1951 Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 I've been trying to work a deal with 4mula-dlx on some rims for spares, but he's having issues w/ getting the rubber off to ship the rims, seems in Canada they can't touch these lock ring rims. What is the best and safest way he could get the rubber off. thanks all. Quote
Dave72dt Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 Tire bead hammer. Used on commercial and ag tires to drive the tire bead down into the recessed area of the rim or in this case, away from the lock ring. Lock ring can then be pried off the rim. Tire is then flipped over and palced on a raised stand of some sort and rear bead then hammered down off rim Easier to show than explain. Can be tough on the paint on the lock ring. Goes well, 5 min /wheel. Not so well, longer. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 If they were close I'd de-mount them for free! What a bunch of Scared-E-Cats! Quote
oldmopar Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 If it is just a matter of getting the old rubber off to fit the rims in a box. Use a sawazall and cut the tires off. Quote
catfishcuz Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 Tell him to find the famous MR RED GREEN i bet he can get em off. Butch Quote
geopcanuk Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Talked to Mr.Green and he recommends lots of soappy water between rim and rubber:D Quote

NiftyFifty Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Worst part is there like 10 ply tires on those rims so they have zero give,I'm doing the sawzall tomorrow on one so we ll see how it goes. I can understand the shops point of view.. Most have 18-25 yr olds that have never seen a split rim so they would likely mess it up anyway I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes!! Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 The bead cutting is the tough part on heavy truck tires. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted October 6, 2011 Author Report Posted October 6, 2011 the bead can get left on, my tire shop can get the lock ring off and ready for paint.... Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 On these split side ring rims----If the outer bead can be pushed down 1" the lock ring comes off easy with a couple tire spoons or large screw drivers-you walk it off, find the 1" start notch and work your way around till it is off. Just don't kink the lock ring.-no danger in removing it all. If the tire beads are rusted to the rim- you're in for some really hard work to free the beads (by manual labor) from the rim. Tire machine or Backhoe bucket teeth work amazingly well. Rusty rims need to be carefully checked over too. Thats how I deal with these old Dodge truck tires and wheels up to the 20" big boys! Quote
NiftyFifty Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 (edited) Well I got one off just a little while ago...have been busy all day with a meeting that was a 6 hour drive and loading up the old 47 Fargo to go to that big scrap yard in the sky So the sawzall worked great with a metal blade in...cut just the right speed, although the tube in the tire didn't help anything. Rim looks to be in good shape..needs a blasting, but she will live on...here's a few pics..FYI after this I gave it a quick sloppy shot of primer so when I take it to the post office to get the shipping quote I don't catch hell for the rusty rim. FYI I cut around and left about 2"'s around the bead edge and then I cut that with the small cut off saw...worked great...cut almost through gave it one little pop with a bar and it broke easily...this way no need to ship with hunks of rubber hangin off. I will just zip tie so the ring can't go anywhere later on. Edited October 7, 2011 by 4mula-dlx Quote
