Cpt.Fred Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 i want to call AndyB. to order parts via telephone, because the last few times i ordered via fax and only got half of what i ordered. there are 2 numbers on their site, "information" 1-617-244-1118 and "orders only" 1-800-457-1250 one of those is a free number, but i can't remember which one. last time i called i chose the wrong number and they yelled at me because i called it from germany... *yikes* i need a new gas pedal and some other goodies... anyone? thanks! TodFitch Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 In the "North American Numbering Plan" (NANP) there are a number of "toll-free" "area codes". They aren't really free of charges, just that the entity receiving the calls pays rather than the caller. "Area codes" are similar to what many other countries call "city codes". Anyway, the 800, 888 and some other area codes are free to the caller (if dialed in North America) but cost the company you are calling every time you call. So they don't like receiving expensive international calls on the 800 number. I am a bit surprised that you can actually call the 800 number. In times past those were blocked from being called from outside of North America. AndyB's text implies that he is willing to talk for a long time if you call his geographic area code (the 617 number) because you are paying for the call. But he wants to cut his costs and only pay for your call if it is cheap and you are order parts (i.e. only call the 800 number from inside North America and be ready to order parts). It is very likely that both numbers ring on the same physical phone... Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 ok, thanks! of course i don't want to cause any extra costs to the man... just want the info if the parts are actually in stock or just some sort of internet ghost parts you won't ever receive. perfect. i'm going to call now. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 If I placed a call to a vendor to purchase parts and they yelled at me for not calling the correct number it would be a long, long time before I ever called them again. Did Andy forget who the customer is? Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 ok, good stuff. i get my grommets and my gas pedal. nice... FIY they don't stock any ignition coils ant the moment, same goes for any sort of lock cyls and keys. that's for the 1940 models i asked for. does anyone know where i can get me a spare coil (firewall mounted) and the lock cyls with keys? i guess they're pretty rare, so never mind if my question is too stupid:rolleyes: Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Fred, I've seen lock cylinders for sale on e-bay frequently, sometimes with key. Auto Zone here in the US usually carries the 6-volt coil. NAPA probably does too. I don't know how they handle overseas shipping. Quote

Especially in this day and age where telephony charges can be very cheap. If I wanted I could set up a 800 number for people calling me and it would cost about 0.03$/minute. That's $1.80 for an hour long call. If a retailer couldn't afford that without complaining something is really wrong with them. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Fred,Auto Zone here in the US usually carries the 6-volt coil. NAPA probably does too. I don't know how they handle overseas shipping. Joe, Fred's car is a 1940 so he has a coil that mounts through the firewall with a terminal on the "bottom" of the coil, inside the car. I am pretty sure AutoZone does not carry them. Fred, I have only seen them on eBay. Had a couple but they each went bad so ended up converting my 1941 Plymouth to use the more readily available "regular" (and less expensive) six volt coil. Just ran the inside coil wire out into the engine bay. Still mount the coil in the hole in the firewall. Jim Yergin Quote
greg g Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Just another example of Andy's wonderful attitude toward those who pay his bills. email roberts http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/order.html Quote

Cpt.Fred Posted July 27, 2011 Author Report Posted July 27, 2011 thanks, everyone! actually the fella i had on the phone at Andy's yesterday was really nice and polite, that has to be said in defense and to be fair. never talked to him before. i've had my struggles with them before, though me: i'd like to order part XY. them: you don't need that. me: well, it's broken on my car, so i guess i do need it. them: you don't. you can have part YZ instead. me: ok... and how would that work? them: you'll figure it out. how crazy is that? i was furious! but they're all the same over here... anyway, let's stop flaming. this thread was a success already! best, Fred Quote
