807kirby Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 Hi all I can purchase a 230 ci plymouth motor 25" block from a 1956 car. how inter changeable will the parts be from my 1950 plymouth 218 ci motor also a 25" block? was just thinking it may be better to start with a crank and rods that had not spun a bearing? Plus I gain a few cubes in the process! just wondering what stuff is the same and what may be trouble. I can get the motor for $100 and has all the accessories still on it.( alt, oil pump, oil filter, dist., starter and bell housing, clutch, intake and exhaust, carb...) Thanks in advance! Bruce Quote
randroid Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 Bruce, Not long ago somebody discussed the evolution of or engine in fine detail but I don't recall the author or the title so I don't know what you should search for, but the answer is likely yes, some of the parts will interchange. Those who remember correctly will chime in and give you a detailed account but as I recall the 201 was stroked to 218 then bored to 230. It's reasonable to assume that if the stroking was done before the boring the crankshafts would be the same and since they're both 25" other stuff should go between them fairly easily. Don't buy the 230 on my say-so; wait for other, more knowledgeable members to give you the straight skinny, then buy it. -Randy Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 I think I would simply install the whole shootin' match complete with it's accessories. They look like the older model, so most onlookers wouldn't know the difference. Is the 56 model 12 volt? Might have to change the generators. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 Are you sure you have a 25" block? I checked your profile and could not see your location? American made Plymouth and Dodge engines are 23" long. Chrysler, Desoto, and Canadian engines are 25". Also I am not sure that Canada ever made a 25" 230CI engine. Quote

I believe the closest Canadian size engine would be a 228 CID which I have and is original to my '53 Plymouth Belvedere. We also had a 218 version as well as a 242, 251, and 265 depending on what year and car they were in. All were long blocks from 1938 onward. Quote
807kirby Posted July 12, 2011 Author Report Posted July 12, 2011 yes it is 25" head and block! it does have 12volt accessories. Napa in Canada lists it as a 230 ci so I assume it is looked up block number on line and said it was a 230ci Has the same pistons in parts listing, and bearings just wondered about the flywheel and clutch, compatibility, then the crank and rods for more cubic inches Quote

All canuck engines as mentioned from 1938 till the end, were long blocks, with the older than 1951 being external by-pass water pumps, and the 1951 to late 60s, were internal by-pass water pumps. That is not say there aren't any 23.5 inch flatties in Canuckland, as my Friend has 2 of them.......but they were made in the USA Quote

Captain Neon Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 When I switched out my 218 out for a '56 230, I used the bell housing and flywheel from the 218. I also swapped the intake and exhaust manifolds. The 6v accessories from the 218 replaced the 12v parts on the 230. Starter, distributor, and coil, if I remember correctly. That's what I did. Since these are Canadian 25" engines you may not have as much to swap out as I did. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 Happen to still have the 12v stuff laying around? Quote
