I'm planning to pull the heater out of my 46 pickup. The chrome band around it has broken or come loose and it attaches from the back. Also I need to install the spacer that Chet donated to my project to stop the heater from wiggling so much. So questions

1. If that stainless band is broken I'm thinking a pop rivet will be a good way to repair it. Can I use a standard steel or aluminum rivet in SS?

2. Do I need to remove the firewall pad behind where that spacer will end up?

I believe the trim covers a seam between the two halves of the case, you there might not be anyplace to drill into and then the rivet would be going into the space of the seam. If not, I would use a sheet metal screw wather than a rivet as you can tighten it to snug with out deforming the trip piece with the the pressure needed to pop the rivet.

Greg you are right its a seam. I was planning to use the rivet to reattach a piece that goes around the backside to the original hole.

Ed,

I have another band that got a little twisted when I was buffing it. I think it will straighten out OK. I will check this weekend.

Also You do not remove the firewall pad the spacer just goes against it.

Thanks. And thanks for checking on the other. I took the one off the heater for my next truck so I'll need one eventually but no rush.

Follow up. Heater installed and I've been driving it. Heat comes out of the heater however the radiator level has not dropped enough for me to put the antifreeze/water back in the radiator let alone make up for what I spilt. Ideas? Must be air trapped somewhere but where?

Doubt it, since the top of the radiator is above the level of the engine and it passages heater also, there really isn't any way air can be entrapped. Perhaps you didn't spill as much as you thought. Run it a while with the heater on and the rad cap off. then don;t worry especially if teh temp gauge is normal.

I know I spilt some plus I still have what I didn't spill in the drain pan to put back. I drove a mile or 2 with the cap off plus about a 60-70 mile trip with it on and no change. I wouldn't think air could be trapped in there either especially since I have heat.
