yourpc48 Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 OK I still have a miss and occasional pop through the carb in the flathead just taking off, higher RPMs seem ok. Carb rebuilt, wires changed, cap, rotor, points, condensor all changed. Dwell perfect. Timing correct. Compression acceptable. 2 plugs wet foul like their not firing. The number 3 and 4 cylinders. The 1 2 5 and 6 fire just right. Any Ideas??? Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Post your compression check results. Quote
yourpc48 Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 When I checked them those 2 cylinders were higher than the 5 and 6 cylinders but I dont have the compression tester right now. I didnt keep the paper I wrote the tests on so I will have to do it again. I was thinking that the head gasket might be the problem but got good compression. I did test it cold however and not warmed up. I will try it with the engine at a decent temp and see what I get. Quote
greg g Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Pull the plug wires with insulated pliers one at a time. Does it effect the way the engine runs a idle? Check the inside of the dist cap for any cacks or tracking. Or if you have the old one put it back on and see if there is any difference. if the timing is correct, a back fire through the carb could be valves not fully seating. Quote
oldodge41 Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Try swapping the plugs with a couple of the ones that are firing just in case it is a case of bad plugs...........Tim Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 [quote I still have a miss and occasional pop through the carb in the flathead just taking off, higher RPMs seem ok. .... 2 plugs wet foul like their not firing. The number 3 and 4 cylinders. The 1 2 5 and 6 fire just right. Any Ideas??? I would say that the plug wires could be reversed on 3 & 4 but you say it does run good at higher RPM s . The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 . Quote
yourpc48 Posted April 9, 2011 Author Report Posted April 9, 2011 The compression in 3 and 4 are at 94 lbs. I have swapped the plugs around and the same holes end up wet. I am going out now to check the firing order. I dont think I have done that but I dont remember. When I put the new plug wires on I put them on one at a time so I didnt get them mixed up. The person before me may have put them on wrong. I go a month or 3 between times I work on the car. Its a real clunker but fun to play with. I will let you all know if the firing order was wrong. Some dummy switched them and then this dummy (ME) didnt bother to check it. Thank you! Quote
