ggdad1951 Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 What have you guys done to replace these parts? There is one on the tranny and severals scattered on the frame. Thanks! Quote
ggdad1951 Posted February 18, 2011 Author Report Posted February 18, 2011 Plasti-dip? some of mine are so rotted, time to be replaced! thanks! Quote
ggdad1951 Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 I picked up some medium wall thickness heat shrink tubing and it seems to work very well, I just don't do the full sizing of the tubing, I got it a bit bigger then the clamps it goes over and slip it on and shrink it down. Looks darn near original! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 lots of the late model trucks still have a variety of these clamps along the frame rails holding e-barke cable, brake lines, fuel lines and such...I stripped a Dakota frame of these and they proven invaluable on securing all my lines on the 51 Plymouth Suburban..quick trip to the local pick and pull ought to net you a large assortment as i bet few folks bother to look at these.. Dave72dt Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Run down to your local Fastenal. They should have them as well. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 with all due respect and certainly it could just be my local store..but I find these folks having to order special most requests I had for hardware and same is the experience of my friend who tried these folks while assembling his car.. and for the time and effort to go to their store...find this out of stock and have to order mentality and having to later return should they get it in in a timely manner a bit more than reasonable and customary for hardware supplier..at 80 miles round trip to and rom the house to their storefront..Restoration Specialties wins hands down..now if just out your back door..that be a different animal.... Dave72dt Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Just out his back door and he gets a company discount. My local is reasonably well stocked, doesn't have everything I've wanted, is expensive, but has much more than the "hardware" stores in town have. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted April 18, 2012 Author Report Posted April 18, 2012 my fial solution: strip some stainless steel sheet, bend it and wrap it in shrinkwrap. Didn't take long at all. And I could match the originals! Quote
HanksB3B Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 Damn!, you're good Mark! (think I'd like the dip better thank the heat shrink to seal the ends off) Hank Quote
Desotodav Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 Good job Mark. I did the same with mine, except I managed to scrape up enough original tabs and have them zinc plated. Making stainless ones like yours would have been a better idea though!! Desotodav Quote
ggdad1951 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Report Posted April 19, 2012 Damn!, you're good Mark! (think I'd like the dip better thank the heat shrink to seal the ends off)Hank my experience with the plasti-dip outside of trucks has been bad, never stayed "good", thusly the heat shrink...might glue off the ends. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 when using heat shirnk. if you have any thing about the place..say a old Vise-Grip hand brake..when heating the shrink tubing, last step is to pinch the end and it will self bond ..leave a tad extra and bond in this fashion and then you can custom trim with a small scissors..I use this technique also for wiping spare wires in harness desiginated for future use.. ggdad1951 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Report Posted April 19, 2012 yah, I actually am not too worried about open ends...not like the 316SS is gonna rust away on me! Quote
HanksB3B Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 Maybe the plasti-dip could just seal off the ends? Nevertheless they are something to be desired. Does your picture represent how many and what size our trucks take? I'd buy a set in a heartbeat! Hank Quote

Hank those (plus 4 more) were all that were bolted in, on, or near the engine compartment on the firewall, inner fender and grill support. SUPER easy to make, let me know if you want details on the parts I used, let me know. All I used was a shear to strip the metal and then punched holes and hand/finger bent around a bolt, and used a vice for the little initial lip bend. Quote
HanksB3B Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 Mine are done with store bought ones. Had to by a pack of 12 to get two I needed (you know how it goes these days) They weren't cheap. they aren't stainless, they aren't exactly a match and they are definately not as nice as the ones you made. HanksB3B Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the offer Mark but I'm good with what I have. Just admiring good craftsmanship. Hank Edited April 19, 2012 by HanksB3B Quote
ggdad1951 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Report Posted April 19, 2012 well, I decided to cut off the shrink tubing and "crimp" the ends as Tim suggested. Results below. I used this odd "duck billed" needle nose I've had for years but never seen anywere else. Duck bill engine compartment area, inner fenders, grill braces firewall Quote
HanksB3B Posted April 19, 2012 Report Posted April 19, 2012 Now I want them! (Just Kidding) Hank Quote
