Barry Maxwell Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 Does anyone have a source for the fresh air duct that runs from the grill to the heater? I have used the search function and only came up with a possible source (J.C Whitney) for defroster duct, which I also need. Quote
41/53dodges Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 how about a flexible dryer duct from menards? they sell different sizes, but they are metal, so you would want to paint them. Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I got mine here. https://www.studebakerparts.com/studebakerparts/store/s/agora.cgi Quote
billschwindt Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 Carquest auto parts has it in there Gates catalog. Quote
Dave72dt Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I would look at turbo/ supercharger suppliers for their universal ducting kits. Straight tubing with flexible connectors. An F-3 I did several years ago had what appeared to me to be standard 3" galvanized round dryer vent or gas furnace exhaust tubing complete with elbows and sheet metal screws to lock in place. Quote
Barry Maxwell Posted February 3, 2011 Author Report Posted February 3, 2011 I got mine here.https://www.studebakerparts.com/studebakerparts/store/s/agora.cgi Reg: This site has 1-3/4" defroster duct that I need, but the largest heater duct they offer is 4". My fresh air duct is 5". Were you able to get 5" duct from them, or is your duct smaller? Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 Are you sure Barry? Every one I have seen is 4". Here's a firewall valve I have. Quote
Dan Babb Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 If you need the flexible hose, I've bought that from these guys. http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/category/Ducting Quote
Barry Maxwell Posted February 3, 2011 Author Report Posted February 3, 2011 Are you sure Barry? Every one I have seen is 4". Here's a firewall valve I have.Reg: Yes, I am sure. See attached photo. I am working on a '51 B3C with a Model 504 heater. They must be different for other year trucks. Quote

Reg Evans Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 Could that be from a car ? The factory knock out on the firewall is only ~4" Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 The 504 heater is a OE accessory heater for the B series trucks! Pretty rare to see one I guess. Quote
Barry Maxwell Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 Could that be from a car ? The factory knock out on the firewall is only ~4" Reg:The hole in my firewall is 4-1/2" and the metal intake at the grill is 4", but there is a 1/2" factory installed collar on the intake, bringing the diameter to 5". The 504 heater is detailed on page 1-6 of the parts manual. Dan: I found the 5" duct on the website you mentioned, but it is $81 and that is more than I want to spend at this point. Also, it is sold in 10' lengths (as you probably know), and that is about twice what I need. Therefore, I will look at any other options I have before jumping in at $81. Thank you for the tip. Quote
geopcanuk Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Got mine from Carquest as mentioned by Billschwindt...perfect fit good quality. Quote

41/53dodges Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 nice! i happen to be harboring one of these said 504 heaters in my pickup. worked from the day i got it! what are these things worth anyways? i dont want to sell it, but im curious. Quote
Barry Maxwell Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 Got mine from Carquest as mentioned by Billschwindt...perfect fit good quality. Thank you and Billschmindt for this source. I appreciate it. Would either of you have a Gates or Carquest part number? Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 please..Hank Yeah...me too please. Do you have the knobs and cables too ? Quote
Barry Maxwell Posted February 4, 2011 Author Report Posted February 4, 2011 Yes, I have the heater but it is all apart and primed. I also have the Heater switch (two position), and the cable, and it works. I am about to take the core to our radiator shop so he can do his thing. I will put all the components on a table this afternoon and take a picture. Perhaps that will be helpful. Quote

The first three show the heater on the truck and the last two show the components (except for the knob/switch/cable which I forgot) bead blasted and primed. After I get the core back, I will reassemble the unit and put it away on my shelf. I am sure that it will stay there for a LONG while. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 That's an interesting looking heater. I don't believe I've ever seen one like that used on these trucks. It seems odd, though, that the fan isn't centered on the rest of the heater unit (according to the marks left on the firewall from where it was mounted). Merle Quote

Also, the flow through the 5" duct is collected in the rectangular opening that you see and then goes into the squirrel cage fan. Also, the inside unit (motor, fan, defrost ducts) is only attached with three machine screws into the firewall. It looks like a bad design. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 I just got to thinkin- remembering, that I parted out a 52 Saratoga with that same heater system in it a few years back! Here is part of what it looks like... Bob Quote
austinsailor Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 I've got one of those in a parts truck. Didn't know it was special. Guess I should pull it and clean it up. Are they suitable for any of the pilothouses, or only certain ones? Quote
