dutchmeister Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Got a Mopar engine and transmission given to me. Head is 25 inches long and casting shows it was casted in 1957. Might be a 251 or 265? No engine number on driver's side near front. Outside of pulling the head off and measuring the cylinder diameter, how else can I tell which engine it is. It has a single one barrel Carter on there now, single exhaust manifold. Six blades on the fan. I have a 230 in my B1D, so I would have to cut the firewall to get it in. Not interested in doing that. But I got a non syncro 3 speed on my B1D. This one might be a 5 speed syncro, and it looks like it would bolt right to my bell housing. Quote
greg g Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Measure the stroke by pulling the pipe plug over cylinder #6. Insert a piece of stiff wire and let it ride up and down on the piston. Make sure it long enought ot make the trip. Quote
austinsailor Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 You don't have to cut the firewall, you move the radiator forward 2". Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Yup, no need to cut the firewall. Here's a photo of a 50 Chrysler 251 in my 52 1/2 ton. I used a radiator from a larger truck I guess(been too long) and actually had to move it back towards the fan with spacers. I added metal tabs to the front motor mounts that reached back 2" to the mounting holes on the front cross member. The third thing I had to do was take a chunk out of the back edge of the front cross member to clear the Chrysler oil pan sump. THE RADIATOR MOUNT. You can see the 1/2" copper tubing couplers I used as spacers to move the radiator back towards the fan blades. The notched out cross member. The front motor mount feet. Quote
Roadkingcoupe Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I am sure that Don Coatney (grand poo-bah) of the 23"-25" engine swap has documented most if not all info to make a successful motor transplant. A search should show the fantastic work that Don C. has done to his P15 Plymouth with a 25" motor. Your situation is the opposite of the discussion below but pertinent. from an earlier thread on the subject: "A rad from a Canuck car is different then a US P15. The D25 has a longer motor and the rad is pushed forward 2". The rad may be the same but the mounting flanges are not. You would have to "reposition" the rad flanges unless you want the rad to sit an extra 2" further away from the fan!" Quote

Roadkingcoupe Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Difference here is I did a car not a B1D truck. You are correct Don. Since it was posted on the car side I guess I missed that important fact. By the way the term "Grand Poo-Bah" was meant in the most respectful and flattering way! hope it came across that way:) Quote

dutchmeister Posted January 30, 2011 Author Report Posted January 30, 2011 Thanks for all the help. I'll probably keep the large engine for awhile, I just rebuilt the 230, ($1500) so I want to stay with it. But a tranny swap might sound good. Leaving for Texas next week and will be gone for a month. About to be a grandpa for the first time! At 63 it's about time. When I get back I'll pull the tranny and see how it looks (and what it is.)
