tom'sB2B Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 I'm trying to find the source of my hesitation. With a strong ecceleration my truck will stall and with higher speeds and rpms my truck will sputter. I replaced the roter, cap, points, and rebuilt the carb. I looked down the carb and there seems to be plenty of fuel coming out when I accelerate. Now I've decided to start from square one by pulling the distributer and making sure its working. I first pulled the distributer and sucked on the vacuum advance...no movement at all. I then tried the centrifugal advance and couldn't get any movement without the fear of braking my rotor off Could this be the source of my problem or do I not know what I'm doing? What should I do? The truck idles fine and accelerates decent when done slowely. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Sounds like it's time to disassemble, clean, and lubricate your distributor. Things may be rusted up or broken in the advance mechanism. Merle Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 When you sucked on the vacuum advance line did it seem as though it held a vacuum ? If not , then your vacuum advance diaphram is torn . Also , can a person suck hard enough on a vacuum advance line to get the advance to move ? I wonder . I used a small vacuum pump purchased from Harbor Freight to test mine . Once when looking over a distributor I found a screw in the top plate that was bottoming out on something underneath , the long screw prevented the plate from advancing . Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 i dont think we as humans make good pumps for anything, i think we make less than 1/2 LB vacuum, and 2 lbs pressure. Quote

austinsailor Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Sounds like fuel starvation to me. Filter, pump and lines is where I'd look. Quote
Andydodge Posted January 6, 2011 Report Posted January 6, 2011 Check the wire inside the distributor and how old are the plug leads?..........andyd Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 There is a bearing under the top plate that gets dried out . I had a bunch of them that were NOS and still they wouldn't turn as the original grease gets dry . As was mentioned above , it would be a good idea to take it apart and see what is going on and clean it up . Quote
