old rat 49 Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 Item # 20. Where can I find one of these ? Searched threads and tech but lost. Mine is shot. Can I temporarily block it off and cap outlet from thermostat houseing and drive without hurting anything ? Quote
old rat 49 Posted November 19, 2010 Author Report Posted November 19, 2010 Hard to tell from their picture but it seems to have a plug in it that can be removed for heater hose which I need. Does anyone know for sure ? Quote
teardrop puller Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 I made one from a piece of flat metal with a 1/2" galvanized "T" brazed to the base. I posted photos, but can not find it. It was easy enough to make, If you are interested, I can go take a photo of it on the engine. kai Quote
old rat 49 Posted November 19, 2010 Author Report Posted November 19, 2010 Forum member has one for me. Thanks. Quote

Don Coatney Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Patched with liquid steel stuff for temporary fix. Surprized to see that it was aluminum insted of steel. What was aluminum? Post pictures. Does liquid steel adhere to aluminum? Quote
Alshere59 Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 (edited) This is what he is talking about, and it is aluminum. The pipe is not. Liquid steel does adhere to aluminum, although I am not sure how long it would work in this case. Then again he shouldn't have to keep it as a long term fix. old rat 49 Posted November 21, 2010 Author Report Posted November 21, 2010 Mine had a hole through the side about 1/2 by 1/4 and the patch is flared over hole on both sides. Looks like it should work for at least a few hours until I recieve the replacemnt. Battery tray is aluminum also to my surprize. Must have had availabilty of such material at end of WW2. Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 I just checked the elbow (item #20 in the exploded drawing posted above) on my car and it is not aluminum. Nor is the battery tray in my car aluminum. The elbow in the picture posted by Alshere59 does not look like aluminum to me. When aluminum oxidizes it turns white and flakes off. It does not rust. In all the flathead mopar engines I have seen and or worked on I have never seen an aluminum elbow. How did you test it to determin it was aluminum? Quote
Young Ed Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Don I've never seen an aluminum elbow or bypass but I have seen aluminum battery trays. Quote
Alshere59 Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 Hmm visual and magnet. Shiny silver nonmagnetic. Looks like aluminum or at least it polishes well. Had a lot of rust "stains". Aluminum will get eat up without cathodic protection. I will post a pic of it cleaned up later. .May not be aluminum but non ferous and looks like it to me. Any others have one to look at? Quote
teardrop puller Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 My P18 had a bypass "thingie" that I thought was Pot Metal. My battery tray is aluminum painted black. kai Quote
old rat 49 Posted November 21, 2010 Author Report Posted November 21, 2010 Mine is definately aluminum or some other non magnetic silver colored light weight metal. Not a rust hole but eaten through non the less with a steel pipe threaded in. Quote
