I've got the opportunity to get into a 50 Chrysler Windsor. I am very tempted.:D I haven't found out enough info about this particular car just yet.

I know its a 251, but what transmission did the Windsors come with? Fluid-drive? Is there any easy way to make it back into a standard? What gears in the rear?

These cars came standard with a Presto-matic transmission. You did not say what body style it is. The club coupe had 20,050 made, 4-dr sedan-78,199 made, 2-dr Newport- 9,925. Windsor was the 2nd upgrade style. Base car was the Royal, then the Windsor, then Saratoga, last the New Yorker. Number on the 6 cylinder engine should be C48*xxxxxx, the 8 cylinder were C49*xxxxxx.

It's a Club Coupe. Good looking car. Presto-Matic? M6? is this good? What rear gears should it have?

I'm trying to remember when I saw this car a few months ago. I think it had a column shifter and a red clutch pedal. Does this sound right? I read up on the M6. Two speeds, and low-high range. Let off the gas and wait for the clunk. Is this on the column? How is it to drive?

The red clutch pedal is to select the gears, Low range (2 gears) is good to about 20 mph tops. High gear is good for 0 to 20 in 1st, then 20 to cruise in high. When in gear the fluid drive allows for gas pedal and brake pedal driving. no need to use clutch after the gear is seleted. Upshift is accelerate, lift, clunk, drive. there is a downshift available for passing at speeds below 30/5.

Not a performance oriented transmission. It is column shifted with reverse where your used to, high range where 3rd would be, and I think low range is where the three on the tree would have 2nd.

You can start out in low range and instead of cluking it, shift to high range using the clutch, giving you a three speed effect. But since low is only good for about 10 mph, it's basically and academic exercise.

Smooth cruisers though. I believe the rear end is in the 3.7 neighborhood.

even more. Must've imagined the red pedal... Vehicle # started with 70844. Does that tell anybody anything?

It apparently has lead a decent life, sure doesn't look bad in any of the photos you posted.

The Dodge don't look too bad either, but love the looks of the Chryslers

Good luck with the Chysler if you decide to get her.

The choice has pretty much been made. Can't pass it up for the price. It has a title, the motor turns over, everything is still there, and I can let it stay there for a little while. Hopefully I can sell the 55 soon and start driving this one. I promise to keep this one as original as possible.:) After all my wife wants me to get this one so I'll have a grown-up car!

Moose, I had a'49 Windsor with that transmission which had 100,000 miles on it when I got it. I drove it another 100,000 miles and the transmission gave me no trouble. The Chryslers were great. Good luck to you.

It certainly has that transmission-- Presto-matic for Chrysler? It slips easily into reverse, and low and high. Won't go where first "should" be. I'm looking forward to learning to drive it.;) I think my wife will like driving it more than my 55, standard 3-speed. She stalled it quite a few times the last show we went to when I was driving the A.

The odometer says 89,xxx and I believe it. That'd be great if it would double that. Car seems really solid, and has undercoating and paint still showing underneath. I'll be crossing my fingers!

Cool, thanks for noticing that. I didn't. I was in a hurry, it was raining, had to be home(2hrs away) in time for the school bus...

I didn't look at the engine number either. Did this one come stock with full-flow? Were the Spitfire heads painted red from the factory? or do you think someone switched out the engine or just wanted a different color head or?

With those ugly coil-over helpers in the back, what else do you think might have been changed? Did they get the cross style U-joints, and the internal expanding parking brake in 1950?

I have a 50 Chrysler Windsor 6.

The full flow filter is stock and the stock color of the engine is silver.

The Prestomatic/fliud drive transmission is very reliable, a much tougher transmission than a lot people think.

I bought the car over a year ago. It's like my first one except it's nicer and it's a 2 door. My wife and I dated in the first one.

I grew up in Plymouths and Dodges. Love these old Mopars.

I'll have to post pics. later. Wife isn't here now to show me how to do it. She's the smart one!

Very nice car . I see the handle of your window crank looks like a rectangular chunk of metal . Does the handle represent the Chrysler building ? Do the window crank handles work well and are they comfortable to use ? I noticed that they fold out of the way .
