Plymouthy Adams Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 visited a somewhat local estate sale with some particular Plymouth parts and other misc automotive..I bee-lined to the garage area and items listed and photographed was not available...as no one was checking out at the time so they had not been grabbed by the few folks ahead of me getting in the door...I was there when the doors opened at the start of the sale..looked to see if I was in Denmark..the other items listed were rough and those that were so-so serviceable had Barrett Jackson prices..BUT..if you don't beat the bushes you never know what may or may not have been...thought it to be a tad cheezy...no real deals at this place however... BobT-47P15 Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Aggravating. Maybe some relative has on old Plymouth. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 The one time I was involved with one of these there was a presale for family members. Bob might be onto something. Quote
Powerhouse Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Estate sales are the best place for car parts and tools...I get most of my tools from estate sales. Usually cheap...and old...and FAR BETTER QUALITY! I got a drum puller for $6 once....just once. I LOVE estate sales. Quote
Mustang6147 Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 That is so funny... When I met my girl, she always antiqued, and went to estate sales. So when we road tripped, we would hop off the freeway and take side roads, incase we came across an estate sale or old antique store.... When we go to estate sales, I always head for the gargae or basement, she is in the dining room or kitchen, and we have our sprint nextel 2 way on our phones, incase we find something the other might like LOL I also learned if it is a possibility, hold it until your sure. It is always funny to see kids sitting in old chairs holding them for there parents... Quote
Powerhouse Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 yeah...my wife is the same way. Part of her business is restoring and selling vintage clothing. She always heads for the bedroom(I set myself up for that one...let 'em fly) and I always head for the garage...then the kitchen and backyard. I went to the estate sale of a retired Marine lifer...what a score that place was, he had a huge collection of goodies, nothing newer than the 50's! Would have been a nice guy to know, I bet he had tons of stories. Tons of ammo and reloading equipment too. Only problem was, it was just before my wedding...so no money. It was like torture. Quote
PatS.... Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 I am on the email list for a local, busy, estate sale organizer They come in, catalog and price everything and have a well advertised 4 day sale. Email list members, however are allowed in 2 hours early on the first day. I've been to about 3 and got some good deals which the general public never saw. Do I feel guilty? Of course not Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 13, 2010 Author Report Posted August 13, 2010 Pat, this could very well have been the scenario here also..but if be the case, it was not listed as such and some people came a long way to see what was no longer there..I had my eyes on a couple very large items, things one could not just tuck under their arm and walk away with, and the space where it was pictured was filled with another item..but as you say, had I been privvy to an inside line to buy..I would not look back either...live and learn.. Powerhouse Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 first come first serve...as long as your willing to pay for it. Quote
p24-1953 Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 tim did you see the tie rod ends? were they right for our cars? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 13, 2010 Author Report Posted August 13, 2010 I saw them but did not look close...sorry I cannot say for sure...prices a tad high on the Plymouth stuff don't your think? especially given its overall condition..pore core value at best.. even the hub caps were higher than most swap or e-bay I figure if one was in dire need of an item or so and based on condition and price..come last hour of the sale..the price may be "best offer" can't think of anything I would drive back to see a second time Quote
p24-1953 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 yeah most of the plymouth items were high but i ended up getting the tie rod ends worst case im out 8 buck for 2 pairs. got a new tool box for the trunk of the car... 1 buck, cant go wrong. i was supprised about the $20 headlight rings and $80 bumpers, i know the 49 bumpers are wanted but i agree seemed high. T120 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) .. I generally don't care for garage or estate sales, but last year my daughter was in town and asked me to drive her around on a Saturday morning. As luck would have it,we happened by a "sale" where there was stuff that drew me in.The family was selling off the contents of the house and garage.I headed to the garage and right away spotted items that interested me.Looking through, I found the scattered pieces for a complete hub puller,a well-used creeper, thick with dirt and grease,a new oil pan gasket for my old Dodge, and some miscellaneous wiring stuff. There were numerous bins filled with nuts, bolts and hardware that were tempting me to buy but I probably woudn't use it in my lifetime,so I resisted.Great stuff, too bad the old boy wasn't present, I would like to have met him. (Did buy the creeper, hub puller, pan gasket and wiring stuff) At another sale I bought a 1/2" SK socket set at a reasonable price from an elderly gent who had used them at a farm equipment dealership where he was employed before retirement - I spoke with him and he was going in to an assisted living place - had to sell his stuff. It's nice to find these items at a reasonable price and have a use for them. I don't do this often ,but occasionally I get recruited to chauffer my wife or daughter to a sale, and sometimes come across something of interest Edited August 14, 2010 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
