How the Heck does this go Back Together?

Trying to put the top to my oil filter cannister back together. Usually I take lots of pictures, sometimes I forget.

I took the top apart to have it blasted. I have the top of the cannister, a tapered spring with a big washer on the big end, a smaller washer and a small round gasket. Pretty sure this all goes together.

I think the small end faces the top and the big end with the washer contacts the filter element. But I don't see exactly how there is a leak-proof seal at the top where the bolt comes through.

I have attached a picture of the cannister. If someone out there could send a picture of the inside of the top so I can see how it goes together, I would be most appreciative.

dont know about the spring..someone will.

it wont leak out the top.

HOWEVER... when assembling..place the rubber ring on the cannister, then place the top on, then insert the bolt..HOLD THE TOP/LID STATIONaRY WHILE YOU TIGHTEN THE BOLT. IF IT MOVES as you tighten, THE RUBBER WILL NOT SEAL.

if i remember correctly,

the spring pushes down the filter element inside the cannister.

The drawing is correct except that you forgot to show the gasket for the lid to seal the unit from leaking.

You did a better job of drawing than I can do.

I can testify that if that skinny little gasket between cannister and lid

isn't in place, or sealed

good - itwill spray oil all over the engine bay.

just remember when you install the rubber ring gaSKET..TO PRESS DOWN on THE LID TIGHTLY as you tighten the bolt...allowing the lid to spin AS the bolt tightens will screw up the seal FOR SURE.!!

good to know!

i just ripped the lid off, threw the filter away, dumped a new one in

and put the lid back on... never turned it upside down.

This helps clear things up. I am a little confused at the round seal at the top (inside). First, I don't remember one being there when I took it apart and there is not one in the little baggie into which I put all the parts for the top. Second, what forces it to seal around the bolt at the top? The top is concave, so the spring won't push the seal in place (unless the small end of the spring faces upward, then it might push the seal upward). I assume the whole unit is under pressure at times.

Everyone agrees - the small end of the spring faces down to the filter element.

I would really like to put a few miles on this before I bathe it in oil.:D

Oh yeah, when I first bought my car it had one of these filters. I took it down to the local oil change place for an oil change, and they installed a new filter.

I made it about a block before I started smelling oil; by the time I made it back there it had pumped out almost 2 quarts of oil, and they spent most of the afternoon cleaning my engine compartment!

I can see that the way I have this back together, this is likely to leak from the top seal. I would really appreciate a picture of the inside of someone's cannister top. I am sure they are all the same. At this point, I don't want to fire this back up because I am sure this will spew oil all over.

Thanks for the pictures. I think there is a seal on the outside of the lid that gets forced in place as you tighten down the tightening bolt (mine is a handle). It looks like that seals around the shaft and is held in place by tightening.

This shows up somewhat in your first photo.

I put mine together this weekend with a washer on top and a seal below it. If the car ever starts again :o, I'll findout if it worked.

You're welcome.You are correct about the washer on top.I compressed the spring with a vise to show the fibre washer
