Don Jordan Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 I know I should always ask first because when I just jump in and do something someone always tells me where they could have it done cheaper. There used to be a lot of speedometer shops - now they seem to be rare. I found one on line close to where I work. He is going to repair my speedo for $200. Does that sound right? I just bought one at a junk yard for $100 and that included the entire gauge cluster. Hey - it's only money. Quote
randroid Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Don, From the many posts I've read here over the years I have come to the conclusion that none of us know absolutely what we're doing when it comes to speedos but we can get 'winner-winner-chicken-dinner' close if we use the information available to us here. $200 may or may not be the cheapest price you can find but it comes down to how accurate you need it to be and how many times do you want to adjust the speedo yourself before $200 sounds like a bargain basement price. Just a thought. -Randy Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 There are no speedometer repair places close to here, best I can tell. Last time I called a place, probably listed in Hemmings Motor News, I think he said it would maybe be around $150, and that was several years ago. So perhaps $200 is about the going rate. I think the real bottom line was.....you ship us the speedo, we take a look to see what it needs, we then quote you a price. IF you don't like the price, then you pay the postage for us to return it to you unrepaired. I probably really need to send one in, but have just been living with a few m p h off. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 what bob said. i think a definite price can only be said if one knows what really needs to be done. is it just disassemble, clean, adjust, and reassemble? or does a shaft need to be magnetised? cogs to be replaced? how many miles are on it? where has it been lying around for the last decades? and so on... from what i can tell, 200$ seems reasonable to me. i paid about 250 EUR, including shipping. there where several parts that had to be replaced and even a shaft that had to be manufactured on the turning lathe and magnetised. this was money weel spent, every works the way it should. good luck with yours! Young Ed Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Don I've got well over 300 into mine and it still isn't right. If you have found one locally for 200 sounds decent to me. Quote

Hey - it's only money. I sent mine to a shop in Michigan recommended on here for rebuilding. He said it was shot but had a rebuilt one he could send me for $200. Who am I to second guess someone who has been fixing them since 1953? The rebuilt one works good so I guess your quote sounds reasonable to me. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Dave that same shop is where I sent mine. They've had it twice in fact. Quote
Don Jordan Posted July 30, 2010 Author Report Posted July 30, 2010 I guess one of the key factors is I feel safe with the guy. We chatted about old cars and he seemed very knowledgeable. He even knew about the colors in the speedometer - which I've never seen because I don't have my dash lights hooked up yet. I get it back in a week. Just to be on the safe side I found another one (untested) for $100 and that came with all the gauges. Quote
Bmartin Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 Can you guys post up some of the names you used. I sent mine in to Redline who initially said that it would take about 2 months. They get my gauges and call me, then tell its more like 4-5 months. So now I am looking for someplace with a more reasonable turnaround time. All help is appreciated. Quote

All help is appreciated.there's a place right here in Phoenix on se7th street called Dick's speed o tach. You might not have to ship yours at all. They advertize fast turn around. Its a small, old house right on the corner of 7th st and Montecito. Quote
Bmartin Posted June 5, 2015 Report Posted June 5, 2015 Yah, I know about them, but got mixed reviews on 'HAMB'. Something about the one in Phoenix is under new ownership and the Tempe is the one to go with. BTW, its already at Redline, they swapped time frames on me after I shipped. I was hoping to find a shop on par with Redline since I was having them swap voltmeter guts into the amp meter face and do the same thing with the gas gauge. Plus rebuild the speedo, repair the temp gauge and calibrate all gauges. I could break this up and do some of it myself, but it was time saving for the one stop shop and allowed me to work on other stuff. Any other recommendations are welcome. Quote
Bmartin Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 I talked with Emeis and they sounded very knowledgeable and good to work with. I was able to talk to Reline in a little more detail and I will be getting the cluster back within my time frame. But I would not hesitate to use Emeis. Quote
