hood ornaments

Recommended Posts

Merle,

Bob not only has probably more original literature related to our trucks than anyone on this forum but really has poured over it and knows it upside down and inside out. It was cool to see all his trucks and literature when I paid him a visit this past summer. If it is there, he knows it and can get back to it.

OK to add more confusion to this debate , I have a "horney" ornament I pulled off a 70 Ramcharger up in my buddies junk yard with a part # underneath of 1347255 ... any guess what that fit... has a rounded back end that looks like it might have sat over a center rib on the hood

That part# is not for a 1951-2 or a 1953 Dodge car. So Hmmmm... We need to see it-please? The center rib doesn't sound right though.

Just to add fuel to the fire I have the Dodge Job Rated parts book that covers 48-53 trucks (including route vans) and on page 1-20 for Hood ornament it lists the part for all trucks models B thru Y as 1280002. Issue date for this book is January 1953 and it supersedes the Dec 31 1952 book.

Unfortunately it doesn't show a picture :(

Thanks for the compliments KJ- Gee now I'm embarrassed! There are many people who know more than I do bout these old Dodges- and probably a lot of them are on this forum too!

Another tidbit of information regarding the two numbers 1097255 and 1280002.

I have the dodge job rated trucks B-Series 1948-1951 (covers B1, B2 & B3) issued June 1951 parts list and the 1280002 does not show up in the parts catalog at all. The 1097255 is listed as a hood ornament but only for the B1 and B2 trucks.

I'm wondering if potential buyers might not have complained about no ornament on the new trucks so Dodge came out with the same one and assigned it a new number because they already had parts manuals out there with no hood ornament listed. Just speculation on m part.

I may as well jump in his hood ornament discussion...I have an ornament that has fairly large horns, and has a part number of 1450249. After reading the prior discussions, saying the part number was a "6" and not a "0", I went and really cleaned up the number and it sure looks like a 0 to me.....it was in a box of parts I got years ago. Just curious that's all......

and again...

Does the rear tail look stepped to slip under a narrow hood moulding? Like as on a 1951-2 dodge car--I cannot locate that part # anywhere. If the tail is factory rounded with no signs of changing it-well....That part number was issued in 1951.

I had tried to get a pic oh the Rams "tail " but between its size and the flash it lost detail , theres no sign of a "step" either under it or over it like where a molding might have gone , now that part # I gave is cast into the under side of it not off a parts box ... it looks to me like it was made to fit over a rib down the hood center ... ? ?

That part # you gave from the underside is the one I wanted so I could check all my books. From your picture I could not see any signs of a notch on the underside of the ornament -it looks to bolt flush to the hood like the 1953 Dodge ornament I have shown. Your Ram ornament shape/body is different from the# 1456249 1953 Dodge car Ram ornament I have shown. If yours has a nicely rounded tail and no V-notch on the underside why do you think it should fit over a rib down the hood? Isn't it mostly gently curved all the way around the mostly flat bottom. It would need a pretty big V-notch to fit over a rib on a hood.

Im going to try again today to take another pic of the Rams "tail" , it really does look like it may have sat over a center rib the way its shaped , on a smooth radiused hood it would have left a open area ... no idea where it may have started life it also has "DC" before the part # and the old DPCd emblem after it ... Im inclined to think it from a car but what one ? its 10 3/8 long , 2 3/4 tall and 5 inches wide ...
