Specialdeluxe47 Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 Just got back and got my 1947 Special Deluxe out and the transmission will not shift out of neutral. It has been in the Garage all winter, I did leave the trans full of oil. It is the original Trans and has never been worked on. Any suggestions? Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 How do you know it will not shift out of neutral? What have you looked at (besides a computer monitor:rolleyes:) to resolve this issue? It is very difficult to offer a "fix" with the limited information you have presented. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 as Don says..input...question is.....is this condition both engine running and not running? Quote
Specialdeluxe47 Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 Yes you are correct I was in a hurry, Thanks for keeping me straight there Don. As I should of posted, The engine and trans was working great before I put the car in storage last October. I pushed it out of the garage to start it and it was already in neutral. After starting the car I went to put it in reverse and I was not able to, so I tried to shift to any other gear and was unable to do so. I then jacked up the car and inspected the linkage and all looked fine. I then removed the linkage from the trans and the Shifter worked fine. I tried to shift the trans by hand but was unable to do so. Check oil and it is full and clean in trans. I tried moving rear wheels and shifting by hand and no change. Pushed it back in the garage and jacked up on stands. So before I remove the trans I wanted to find out if anyone else has had this problem and if anyone had any suggestion before I remove the trans form the car? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 does the clutch disengae from the flywheel when depressed?? Quote
Specialdeluxe47 Posted May 16, 2010 Author Report Posted May 16, 2010 The clutch feels normal< but have not taken off the bell housing to verify that. because in the past you did not have to have the clutch engaged to shift unless the motor was running Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 With the engine shut off and the clutch pedeal depressed can you shift it into any of the gears-if if you can your clutch disc is stuck to the cluch cover/flywheel. To attempt to break the disc loose, put the e-brake on apply the brake pedal firmly, put it in 3rd and with the clutch pedal depressed try to crank the engine over. Hopefully the disc will break loose. Bob Quote
Specialdeluxe47 Posted May 17, 2010 Author Report Posted May 17, 2010 (edited) Does not matter if the engine is running or not, still can not shift out of neutral Edited May 17, 2010 by Specialdeluxe47 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 when you had the linkage loose..were both gear lever unable to detent and enter any gear..if so, you may have to pull the shifter cover and inspect internal for maybe a stuck stop ring or any combination of shift lever shafts and shifter rails.. woodie49 Posted May 17, 2010 Report Posted May 17, 2010 If you can not physically shift the trans from neutral whether the engine is running or not, it sounds like it almost has to be a linkage issue. You pushed the car out of the garage, so either your clutch is disengaged, or you are in nuetral. If your clutch is disengaged (hung up spmehow?), you should be able to move the shifter all day long, you just won't get power to the wheels. If your clutch is engaged and you are in nuetral and the trans is trying to shift into gear (as you work the linkage) with the engine running, you will hear all kinds of grinding. So, it sounds to me like you have a linkage binding issue. I guess one other thing you should do is to check that the shifter arms at the transmission are secure and that they actually operate the trans as you shift. If it ran perfectly when you parked it, not much chance of the trans going out while stored. Quote
