aero3113 Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Look at what the bid is up to http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Plymouth-49-Special-Deluxe-Convertible-8K-Frame-Off-Resto-Looks-and-Drives-Fantastic-50-Pix-/250623981401?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3a5a5a7759 Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I'm glad it's up that high, hope it goes more. I suspect there will be naysayers to pick the car apart, but I like it. Only thing better would be if it were a 52 Quote
aero3113 Posted May 12, 2010 Author Report Posted May 12, 2010 I wonder what it looks like under the hood? Weird they do not show any pics:confused: Quote
pflaming Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 They did! Three (3) engine pics of a very common looking engine compartment. Compared to what some forum members have done, uughh! For that amount of $$ that engine ought to POP when the hood opens, and it doesn't. :(The rest of the car, in my opinion, VERY NICE. Quote
adam_knox Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Years ago I was on a serious hunt for a 49 Plymouth Convertible...wanted that exact color too. Sure enough, after a dry spell they all come out of the woodwork. I gotta say though, 29K seems high in comparison to all the ones I've looked at buying. For a frame off they sure didn't give the engine area much attention. For the price its nice to have everything done, though interior doesn't quite look original. It does have all the fancy accesories. If someone on here buys it I'd love to take her for a spin for a "what might have been" ride! (Hands down glad I went with the 49 Chrysler though...) Whoever gets it will love it, especially with the O/D tranny! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 True.......as said above......engine was evidently totally ignored for cosmetics in the stated 8K restoration. I also think for the big money wanted, the engine and compartment should be up to the standards of the rest of the car. Did you notice they went overboard in the trunk with a liner on the inside of the lid, carpet on the sides, etc....... Don't think the seats are original material, but the color scheme looks like it copied the original. Quote
RobertKB Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 There are no picturs of the underneath of the car and I always find that a bit suspicious. It could well be like the engine compartment, grubby and not up to full restoration quality. Nice car though and the engine compartment could be detailed quite easily. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 My thought is that if paying almost $30,000 for an old car, I would not want to have to do anything to it - it should be done up in all areas. 30K would be cheap for some cars, but for a Plymouth - even a convertible - that's getting on the high side. Just my 2 cents. Quote
jd52cranbrook Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I say more power to the guy, hope he gets more. Someone can pay around $300 to have it done, or a weekend of his or her own time to detail the engine bay, no glitter, just stock and clean. I would bet 90% of the owners on here neglect their engine as far as looks go. For what ever reason. Some don't believe in it. If everything works up to snuff on that car, its a good buy. Time is money,, even for hobbyist. Parts cost money, even if you are frugal. If you really think about the time spent on ones car, how much time one spends on this web site finding answers even, 30K would add up quick I bet. That car is a good buy for someone who can afford it. But I would drive it, everywhere. Would not make it a trailer queen. Ahhh the Internet, a wonderful place to be picky picky picky,, Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I painted my engine block with a can of POR 15 and a 2" brush. The black stuff is spray can. Polished some metal items with Mother's mag wheel polish to shine them up. Engines always manage to get dirty again over time and use, but I try to keep it reasonably clean. There are some super nice engines in some of these old Mopars - including yours, J D. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Boy if that 49 is worth that much my dads 51 must be getting up there too. And his does have a fully restored engine compartment. Quote
David Strieb Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Auctions have no bearing on what it's worth, the bidders determine what it sells for once the sellers reserve is met. All it takes is people bidding against each other to drive the price higher. I've sold parts in an auction format for 5 times what you can buy it for at NAPA, I'm sure not gonna tell them to stop bidding. How many times have you seen a plain jane sedan for sell at a cruise in for some insane price, with the seller stating that one "just like it" sold at barret jackson for the same price. IMO, something is only worth what a buyer will pay for it. Quote
