Uncle-Pekka Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 I supposed these were made for SL (Super Light) roadsters only. At least judging by the price this is really desirable item. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1946-1948-DODGE-ALUMINUM-GRILLE-NORS_W0QQitemZ250608273753QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_T Quote
RobertKB Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 Price is a bit steep but I don't think excessive. If you have been searching for a complete grill for you car, and they are hard to find, this would be very appealing. Missing bars are very hard to come by unless taken from a broken grill. I wouldn't be surprised if it sell for the asking price. Quote
Roadkingcoupe Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 The three types of D24/D25 grills I have seen are Stainless (original, US cars only?) Pot Metal found on Canadian models (probably Export and AUS as well) Aluminum (after market? NORS?) 1946-1948 Desoto sedan S-11 taxis were common and I have seen a replacement (non-MoPaR) aluminum S11 Desoto grill that was NORS. Problem was that aluminum castings were coarse and poor quality and hard to polish. The Stainless and chrome plated pot metal grills are the ones that look the best IMHO. The pot metal grills tend to crumble from the inside and are expensive to prepare and re-chrome. For that kind of money I would wait for a Stainless steel grill in good condition that can be straightened and polished. The stainless grills rarely rust, they can be found. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 5, 2010 Report Posted April 5, 2010 the biggest problem with stainless grille is the mounting hardware is plain steel and these get rather corroded and even with the best of care break or are beyond slavage when removing necessitating new hardware to be affixed. Best part about grille metal is it can be disassembled and put back together..requires cutting of spot welds which can be tacked back , riveted with pop or standard rivets you peen in place. When you get dented stainless removing these brackets for access to repair also gives one the option to upgrade/renew the mounting harware. Highly suggest one do that if possible.. I have never seen a lightweight aluminum grille for a D24..cannot see the advantage here..I mean a loping elephant is only so fast... Quote
