Rollie Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 does having the air cleaner up this high look bad? out of place? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 I think it would be less noticeable if the white thing it's resting on were either silver or black. What is it? Quote
Rollie Posted January 30, 2010 Author Report Posted January 30, 2010 It's a pvc pipe adapter and I'll be painting it black. I'm afraid it doesn't look quite right sitting up that high. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 as the adapter is most likely to clear the top of the car, why not get a l;ow profile oil bath cleaner...usually a tad bit bigger in diameter but with the shorter hieght..may be less obvious to the casual observer Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Nice engine, now since you have split exhaust, and what 2bbl carb, why not go custom breather. I am not being critical, your oil bath will blend in a little better , when your adaptor base is painted black too. It's up to you, if it were my engine, and now it is custom, would go custom breather too.... Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Why are you interested in raising the air filter? I would worry about it hitting the hood. You'd need to make a longer steadying bracket for the higher filter location. Also, PVC might crack after a while. Your firewall and underhood area is looking good. Is that original firewall paint or have you re-done it? Quote
Rollie Posted January 30, 2010 Author Report Posted January 30, 2010 I should let you all know what I'm up to. Even though I have split exhaust, I want to keep the motor looking factory. I have totally dissembled the oil bath and am going to mount a K&N cone filter inside while cutting a "picture window" in the back of the breather to get as much fresh air as I can. I figured the higher the better to find cool air maybe? Maybe a better question would be does anyone now when to find the coolest air charge with a stock oil bath canister? Quote
Rollie Posted January 30, 2010 Author Report Posted January 30, 2010 Thanks. It's the original firewall paint, I just cleaned it up. It's clearing the hood and I was going to make a new bracket if I keep it up that high. Quote
greg g Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 even with the cloth or paper element the assembly tends to ba a top heavy deal. The auxiliary support piece that anchors it to the head is highly recommended. Quote
Robert Horne Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 It's a pvc pipe adapter and I'll be painting it black. I'm afraid it doesn't look quite right sitting up that high. The PVC may not be strong enough after the engine gets hot. A piece of exhaust pipe would be a good replacement, and with paint to match your exhaust. Quote
Rollie Posted January 31, 2010 Author Report Posted January 31, 2010 Tim, I love the look of the '55 oil bath cleaner as it's the same as the early Hemis, problem is it doesn't clear the heater/fresh air duct. Quote
Rollie Posted January 31, 2010 Author Report Posted January 31, 2010 I think I'm going to go with the stock location after all. I hope the PVC isn't a problem as this piece fits the carb really nice and is perfect for the size filter I want to use. Quote
greg g Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 Your carb also from the later engine??? Check out blueskies pictures, he modified the heater plenum to match his aircleaner. He says he doesn't mind asnwering repitive questions so give him a shout. Quote
Rollie Posted February 1, 2010 Author Report Posted February 1, 2010 Greg, When looking for 230 parts to upgrade my 218, I came across a complete '55 Dodge motor. '55's came with the 2-barrel. I'm determined to get a hidden cone filter setup going for that 2-barrel in the stock looking 1-barrel air cleaner. Quote
blueskies Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 ...He says he doesn't mind asnwering repitive questions so give him a shout. Rollie- Modifying the air duct was fairly easy, if you decided that you wanted to run the bigger air cleaner... Here's a couple of pics of what I did. I'm using an aftermarket air cleaner cover over my dual carbs, and the air duct was in the way of the rear carb and filter. I scribed a line in the shape of the filter on the cardboard duct, and then cut it out with a utility knife. I then glued a piece of cardboard of similar thickness to the new opening in the duct with epoxy. After the glue was dry, wire-brushed the surface of the old cardboard to get rid of the shaggy nastiness it had, and coated it in POR-15 Paint I had left over. The new shape of the duct doesn't seem to make any difference in air flow from the heater, it works great. Pete Quote
Rollie Posted February 1, 2010 Author Report Posted February 1, 2010 Well that looks easy and I like the results Pete. Just ordered the filter for the 1 barrel cleaner: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RU-5146 Quote
