I picked up a 47 D24 a year ago and finally softened the engine to where it turns over. She has spark, but I think the firing order is off. Anyone know where #1 is on cap? My father was the mechanic, me I went into carpentry but I really want to fix the gal back to what she was. Any suggestions or things to watch for? Any and ALL help is appreciated!

Thanks

Follow the spark plug wire back from the front most spark plug to the distributor cap. This is your #1 plug wire. Going around the cap clickwise (I think) the next one should be #5, then #3, #6, #2, & #4

Thanks guys. The problem was that the entire head was off when I got her. Having a 6 year old son "helping" makes life interesting... I started out by having to hone out the cylinders and put the engine back together. Thankfully all the parts were left on the back seat..

I am just having fun with my son and I under othe hood. Lots of memories doing that with my father.

I can't thank you guys enough.

This is the best part of the experience of owning an older car especially when you can get time with your son or even daughter when working on the car.

This is the time that you get to bond with your kid and the best part about it is that they do not even know that, they are just having fun. Later on when they become a teenager and when they need to come to you because of an issue they will feel that they can talk to you.

I have two daughters that haveboth helped with my car and it has been a great experience for all three of us. Also this hels to keep the hobby going strong. Take lots of pictures with your son becasue this is what he will remember in his later years and hopefuly he might have a son or daughter that might want to help work on a car.

Have a great time together.

I am working on gettine my daughter more involved. She wants to pick the final color when I paint it. Any suggestions on where I can get some colors for her to choose from. I really want an original color, but I can't find paint chips that we can actually see. They are all so faded I don't think they show the true colors.

I will get pictures and probably post because it is fun!:)

Thanks

You can do a static timing procedure, as over the years, the distributor may not be alligned as the factory did it. In the head over #6 cylinder there is a square pipe plug. If you remove this you can insert a length of stiff wire (about 8 inches long) into the hole and withthe spark plugs out rotate the engine by hand. the wire will ride the piston through it's travel and see when it's at TDC. Number 1 Cylinder will also be at TDC with number 6. Now if the pointer on the front of the block is aligned with TDC #1 will be on its compression stroke, as such the rotor will be aligned to #1. If it not pointing at TDC onthe pulley, crank it over i more revolution. Remember to put the pipe plug back in before atttempting a start.

When I put my engine back together, Ihad everything correct as far as firing order was concerned but I was one tower of on the dist cap. Once I got it corrected it started right up.

The old gal is still rough:o, but give me sometime to figure how and I will show the pictures to all. Since this is the first car I've done. I am really looking forward to it. And my daughter has named the 47 "Katherine" as in Katherine the Great:D. Having my kids involved also is definately a blast.
