Checkout the thermostat housing for a small block mopar V8, no bypass hole/fitting cast into it, same bolt pattern as the mopar six, I've just got one thats all shiney chrome to use on the Edgy Finned head, and theres enough room for the thermostat to fit hanging down into the head and the housing has a recess to locate the thermostat also........I paid about $20.00 Australian here in Oz but you'd get it in the US for 10 bucks or less.......try your local speed shop.......andyd

Also as the V8 housing is alloy, the weight reduction will make the car go faster..............lol.........jeese I'm a wanker......lol..........still gota look for the positives....lol.....andyd

If I have a factory neck that HAS the bypass, can I replace it with one that doesnt. I guess what im saying is, is the bypass neccassary? From what I understand it prevents hot spots in the motor before the thermostat opens. How important is that?

Yes, you can run without the bypass. Bypass was a standard feature on Special Deluxes until 1951 when the internal bypass ports were added to the blocks. Prior to 1951, Deluxe models did not typically use a bypass.

A simple bypass on a non-bypass engine is easily engineered by drilling two or three 1/8" holes in the thermostat. This not only 'burps' the cooling system, it also allows a small amount of coolant to flow thru the system, thus eliminating 'hot spots' and reducing the liklihood of pump cavitation. I believe its an old racer's trick on SBC's.

Okay, bought a chrome water neck for a chevy V8. Bolt holes and outer shape are the exact same. However, the stock waterneck has a ridge in it for the large thermostat to sit in. This chevy one doesnt have a ridge because all the "v" style blocks from chev have the ridge built into the intake manifold rather than then water neck. So I bought a thermostat with the neck hoping I could make it fit. Unfortunately the thermostat is smaller and just falls into the head on my dodge? Any ideas?

Get some sheet metal and put your waterneck on it, trace it out and then cut the metal to fit like the chevy gasket only make the hole in the middle a little smaller so you can use the sheet metal to hold the thermostat suspended between it and the water neck.

You'll have to use sealer between the sheet metal and the housing so it won't leak.

Don't know how much you are into metal fabrication, but here's one solution. Make an adapter plate that would go under the new neck. Make that opening so the thermostat fits in it without falling through. Then make the gaskets and install it that way.

What about sawing the tube portion off the rusted out neck. Put thermostat gasket old piece gasket new neck. Get bolts a little longer for the extra thickness and you should be good.

Or buy a MOPAR V8 housing that has the indent in it to hold the thermostat..........and get a chrome housing because they make the car go FASTER......andyd
