blueeyeartist
Hi guys, and gals, This is my first post on here although I have scoured over many many posts while building my 1950 desoto. I am currently stuck with my wiring. I ordered a harness from RI Wire (6volt stock replacement) and I have not been able to locate where the last few remaing wires go. I am stuck with the trans harness. I hooked up the passenger side of the trans and kept going with hooking up the rest of the trans harness to the coil and then im stuck. I can't seem to find the (forgot the name at the moment sorry...will check the diagram as soon as I get home) it's the trans regulator I beleive?? It has five wires going to it. I was wondering if anyone knew exactly where it's mounted because I purchased the car missing alot of parts so it just may be gone. Also I have got the car able to turnover and evrything just no spark am I right to think it is because the fluid drive trans has the ignition interrupter switch and all the relays so by not having it hooked up it won't fire? Please help guys trying to get it done for our big Car show week here in Reno, Nv Hot August Nights. Thank you for your time

mackster
also, there is this year old thread that taught me alot of things I didnt know about the DESOTO. . . it is called simplematic vs tip toe shift. . . http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=10960
PatS....
If this is what you see through the transmission access hole, you have an M6. Chrysler Corp. used a different trade name for Chrysler Dodge and DeSoto hydraulic shift semi automatic, but in 49 and 50 they were all M6's The other access panel further up the transmission hump is for access to the Fluid Coupling to add fluid. greg g
Also check the Imperial Club website. In their repair section they have a page by page technicians hand book covering the Semi Automatic transmissions. With trouble shooting guide and diagrams. http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/index.htm
Frank M.
Pats right. They changed in 49 to M-6 eliminating a relay. The wires you have are probably for an M-5. Check it out. Frank M.
blueeyeartist
Here is the wiring diagram from RI Wire. Hopefully you can read it, if not I will upload a bigger picture, anyways the wires I could not find are #'s 1-7. Hope somebody knows. I was told the harness is an exact replica of the original one so you would think they went to something but it did say it was for the "hydraulic transmission" so maybe it's different. Just wish my car would start and drive. If the starter turns the engine and everything seems ok but no spark whatsoever what do you guys think it could be. Everything else is hookep up exactly where it says to be. I hooked a multimeter up to the regulator and it drops from 6volts to 3volts when trying to start. And reads .023 volts at the coil so something is wrong. I was told previous owner jumped it once with his 12volt daily driver, would that fry something causing it to have no spark? PatS....
Jumping with a 12 volt car will work BUT, you can't leave the cable hooked up. You need 2 people and the second person touches the cable to the battery for just the time it's cranking and you can't crank it for too long. If it won't go right away, stop. If you are alone and clamp the cable on and the try to start it a couple of times or leave the cable attached to charge the battery, you'll fry the regulator and maybe the points too. (ask me how I know THAT ) For the cost of those, I would replace them and double check all the grounds. For what it's worth on my Chrysler #1, I carried a new voltage regulator with me...came in handy a couple of times. Edited July 31, 2009 by PatS.... blueeyeartist
I was told cables were thrown on and cranked until the 6volt battery was bubbling fluid out of the top. So, since I probably need a new regulator where would be the best place to pick one up? I also own a 1951 desoto S-15 2 door, would it's regulator work on my 1950 S-14 4-door? How do I check the points to see if they're ok?
martybose
I've got a Rhode Island harness in my 47, and I'm very pleased with it. Nonetheless, at least one of the harnesses that I bought from them may have been an exact duplicate of what was on some Mopar, but it wasn't mine! I wound up cutting the sleeve off of the harness and used the individual wires to make up something that fit my car. Marty
blueeyeartist
oh man...now I'm really wondering if that part of the trans harness is correct or not...hmmm.
desoto1939
From my dealing and many discussions with RH Wiring. They only will make a wire harness from an original harness to sell. They do not take a homemade harness and then make a copy to sell as an original. At one point they had made a harnes for a 39 Dodge that I knew the owner and it was an AACA Senior car. The harness was wrapped with cloth tape. I had informed them that the correct harness hsould have been in a casing with blue stickers and also sent them a copy of the harness that was taken out of a 39 Desoto which is the siter car. They now have corrected the pattern and are very willing to work with the car owners. I have also put in one of their taillight harness for my 39 Desoto and had asked that they wire in a ground wire and they did this for me after I explained the need for a seperate ground wire. Great people. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
