Gents,

We all have a few partial rolls of duct tape lying around so this probably isn't as OT as I think, but I took my two rolls and some cheapo-cheapo trash bags out to the '48 P-15 this afternoon to weather-proof the windows because the tarp is getting to be a pain in my butt. The first (and smallest) roll got used on two windows and then it was gone, so in came the second. What a difference! The first ('Duck' brand by Manco) was so far and above superior to the second (Intertape) that mere words don't express it. Both are made in the US of A and both were the same gray color but that's where the similarities ended, and if I hadn't already had two beers I would have chucked the Intertape and bought a new roll of the good stuff.

I never knew I had an opinion on different brands of duct tape so I thought I should ask if anyone here has strong opinions about other items we seem to take for granted?

Norm,

I should have been more specific in that one was at least twice as thick as the other and had much superior adhesive qualities. I don't know their difference in ages but from the difference in the size of the rolls I'd say the better one was much older.

Hi Randy,You may be aware of this, but I thought I'd mention that although it's handy, duct tape isn't UV resistant and is generally a short term proposition outdoors.

...That is,unless you get the really good stuff that Red Green uses on his TV show. ;)

I love Red Green. I am sure that his beloved duct tape is only found in Canada.:P Remember, keep your stick on the ice and if the ladies don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. http://www.redgreen.com/

Has anyone tried that "Gorilla" tape? I've used the "Gorilla" glue, and it works pretty well, but I haven't tried their tape yet. It does seem to be a bit pricey, but if it works well, then maybe worth the cost.

The original "duct" tape was pretty good stuff, but that was over 30 years ago. The first time I ever used it was to tape up the damaged bodywork on my Austin Healey Sprite SCCA car to get through tech inspection, it worked! The generic stuff they sell nowadays is hit or miss. Gorilla tape is pretty good stuff as an alternative. The all around all time best tape there is in this field is gaffers tape. It is primarily a black fabric tape that is used on film sets to hold most anything to most anything else. It is not cheap, but works better than anything I've seen. Most places that sell tape as a main line product will have it and it is available online. I don't work in film or television anymore, but I always have gaff tape around. Sadly I don't have a Sprite anymore either.....

At one point in the last house we were in, I used the Manco tape to seal the joints in the 6" round heat runs that branched all directions in the basement ceiling. I then wrapped the ducts in fiberglass and secured it with more of the same tape.

My wife came down there, examined my work and asked if I was going to leave it all "cobbled up" like that. I asked her if she knew exactly what DUCT TAPE was suppose to be used for....:)

I use gorilla tape all the time because thats what my boss buys and he preffers it over any other tape in the market. so I do now!. . .one thing is that it holds like crazy and its a pain to get out (sounds like I am complaining about it working well???) so its good. . .:D

Well one problem I found was that when you go to remove the tape, it will also try to take your paint off with it. This happened to me when I sealed up my cowl vent prior to me replacing the gasket and uncloging the drain hole.

radioguy7,

Not only will it remove paint but will deposit its adhesive on the metal. Fortunately mineral spirits removes that adhesive, as does alcohol. As I mentioned in the beginning of the thread this is only a temporary fix, and thanks for all the responses; there is a new brand or two I'm going to try.

I've used some from the Dollar General stores.....it's cheaper than others, but not

so good. So, I won't buy that kind any more.

Red Green uses 3M Scotch brand duct tape. In Duct Tape Forever: Friends Stick Together, Red, Harold, and Dalton were on their way to Minnesota to enter their duct tape goose in the 3M duct tape contest. I grew up in Southeast Minnesota, outside of Canada the Red Green show is the most popular there. The PBS stations have the stats (and the donations) to prove it. One can watch the Red Green Show all afternoon on a Saturday, and every day during the week. Gave serious thought to taking a vacation to Toronto and be in the audience while they filmed an episode during the final season.
