BobT-47P15 Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Tonight I went over to remove the flat tire from the coupe. Located on the right rear. Wellll......that wheel has studs with nuts, rather than the normal bolts. And.......as it turns out, left handed thread on those studs. What do you suppose that axle/drum could have come from?? Guess it's been working, as the drum has paint on it from when the car was painted the current brown color. And that appears to be several years old. Then, the possible good news......the man who does my mechanic work is employed by a restoration shop. Out back, just lying there, is a rear end and front clip from a couple 48, 49, or 50 mopars. So, a source for some parts if needed on the coupe. Maybe we can replace that odd axle with the right item. The weight of the tree and the fact it scooted the car sideways a little evidently broke the bead loose on the tire, causing it to go flat. Gonna take that wheel to the tire store and have a tube installed. Don't plan to run these old tires, but they are good for keeping the car mobile while being worked on. Quote
Normspeed Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 One of the things I love about these old cars is the history you can read into the repair work. Some real creative stuff sometimes. And they just keep on going... Quote
Young Ed Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Bob that axle is probably from some other mopar. Dodges in the early 50s had wheel studs. Probably were LH on the left. Dads 69 fury has studs that are LH on the left. Quote
Brendan D25 Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Bob, maybe you should check the ratio on that differential. It might have been changed to get better highway cruising. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 24, 2009 Author Report Posted June 24, 2009 Ed, that's what I was wondering about. I figured they were probably from some older Mopar, but wasn't sure when they used the studs. I think the brake drum is different too. Should have taken a picture. Maybe when I go back to reinstall the fixed flat tire. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 It's probably just the drum that got swapped, theres no need to after an axle. You could just change the drum or even push out the lug bolts and replace them with RH. Quote
Frank Elder Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 It's earlier than the 50's for studs on a dodge, my 47 has them. Quote
Charlie Olson Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 After dinner tonight, I came on P15D24 forum and clicked on this thread. When I clicked on the photo link and saw the bronze colored coupe crushed by the fallen tree, I was so startled that I almost lost my dinner. I certainly hope no one was hurt during that storm(?)/incident. Darn. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 25, 2009 Author Report Posted June 25, 2009 Charlie, I tried to send you a PM, but that feature is not turned on for you. Was going to send link to some pics of the coupe as it is now. Bob Quote
