The eBay 40 Plymouth arrived yesterday from IL. It's a very original car and still has the P10 engine in it. I am very pleased ! It has lots of little bugs to be ironed out so I thought I'd start with a tune up. Does anyone have the tune up specs handy. unless it's a fake this car has only been drivin about 500 miles since 1978 according to a service sticker on the door jamb. Where would I find the specs on this engine?

Thanks,

Reg

PS...Don if you are still on the road and heading north from Fresno stop by my place.

Beautiful car Reg. All my auto books are temporarily in storage, no tune up specs for you. I'm sure someone on the forum will have some info. Have fun getting to know your new ride.

Hi Reg, Great car! Looks like you'll have lots of fun poking at it!

Here are the tune up specs from Motors Manual for '39 - '42 Plymouths. I suggest if you don't already have a Plymouth and /or a Motors service manual, to get one. They are available on eBay for about $20-$40. Motors Manuals can be found in used book stores.

There is a couple pages of service procedures in my Ply. manual.

Plugs: Autolight A7B (original desigation) .025 gap; Points gap: .020 - dwell 35 - 38 degrees; Timing: "DC" or "0" on damper; Idle speed: 475 rpm; Firing order - 153624; Compression should be around 100-110 for a new engine.

Thanks Norm and Bob. I do have the service manual for the 46-52 Plymouth models but not for the 40. Looks like the specs are about the same. I'll have to warm her up and check the compression. I'm going to have to remove the manifolds because the gasket between the intake and exhaust is blown out. Terrible noise ! It does have a new exhaust system from the manifold back to the tailpipe though.

I wonder. Would it be too much for this lil 218 to install my 56 Plym.two barrel manifold ? Would it wake the engine up any?

Looks like if you use the 2 bbl manifold with that adaptor to run your stock 1 bbl carb, the carb will be 90 degrees off from stock. Unless the 40 carb mounted differently from the later Carter B&B carbs. Could present a linkage challenge.

Reg, first thing I would do is go buy some good fender covers. It would be a shame to do any damage to that paint while swapping intakes and stuff!

The paint isn't as good as it appears in the photo but I do want to preserve what's there so I'll be using some old sleeping bags I have saved just for this purpose.

I won't be using the 1 to 2 adaptor. I was thinking of using the stock 56 2 bbl manifold in the photo.

Correction. I guess it has a 201 c.i. engine ,not a 218,and I was wondering if the 2 bbl's would be too much for the engine.

Reg I think that 2bbl intake would be too much so you should sell it to me instead!

Ed, you could probably put a 2 bbl on your 1 bbl intake. Check to see if you can buy an adapter plate for it. If not, it's not hard to make one. I had my son make an adapter plate for my 350 engine so I don't have to replace the intake. It's an 89 350 engine and had a fuel injection intake setup originally. Had a 2 bbl carb sitting around. After measuring and checking the throats they lined up just right. So, he made an adapter plate so I can mount the 2 bbl carb to the existing intake. Got the idea from the Elderbrock catalog. They sell a 4 bbl adapter plate to do the same thing using the existing fuel injection intakes. Saves me the cost of buying both the carb and a new intake. So you should be able to do the same with yours.

Uh....well......um......let's see......oh.......I'll have to get back to ya on that Ed.

I know I could put a 2bbl on there with an adaptor. Its just not quite the same as the actual thing. If I can't get an actual 2bbl intake I'll more then likely just use my 2 1bbl fenton.

Anyone ever tried to verify the mileage on an old car. I'd like to try and document the mileage on this 40 Plymouth. How is it done? The service tag looks like 9-3-78 to me with 600 miles less than is showing on the odometer now.

Why not try giving J&R Service in Oshkosh a call. Other than that its impossible to positively verify actual millage. Some of the methods of possible verification are wear on foot pedals, floor mats, drivers seat cushions, steering wheel, etc. If wear on these items is in line with the odometer reading, then the millage is more than likely actual. Once again, Great car!

Guess you could call that number to see if the service station is still there.

Pretty hard to authenticate mileage on these oldies, in my experience. That oil sticker may be your best information. No other service notes or any info in the glove box?? Could the seller give you name of the previous owner??

I was given copies of the original sales receipt with the buyers names and also a transfer of title where Pearl ( the owner) gave the car to her daughter ( Adeline) and her husband. I googled her name and address and there she was. I called the number and she answered and told me all about the car. She said the car was rarely driven. Mostly on weekends and was up on block during WW2. The daughter is 80 yrs old now and has agreed to wright me a little story about what she remembers about the car. She's gonna look for photos too. I also called the number on the service sticker and J & R are still in business and family owned for over 30 years. The lady there is gonna see what she can did up. Is this great or what!!!!!:D

The car will of course be named Pearl in honor of the original owner.

Boy Howdi Tim. I think so too. I just got off the phone with Pearl's grandson who owned it from 1971 until a year ago. He's gonna send me the originals to replace the copies I have now of the sales agreement and stuff.

Man...the radio was a $53.00 add on to the $881 price of the car.

Guess I won't be chopping the top on this one.;)

Reg;

Not sure where you are located north of Fresno. I will look you up on my next trip out west. I head back to Tennessee Friday morning.

reg, i put 2 one bbl carbs on my 218 and it performs much better.

i also have that 2 into 1 adaptor i am presently using on my 230. use the newer 2bbl manifold since you are changing gaskets anyway.

i had to grind out the manifold hole to match the diameter of the adaptor for a smoother flow, othrwise it is useless. havent started it up yet...still on the bench.

lots of advice around here...try it all!!!

Don,

I'm about 1 hr. north east of Sacramento in the Sierra foothills. We're at the 2500' elevation and near the Empire Gold Mine just off hwy 49 in Grass Valley. Next time then.
