I just picked up a carb kit for the Chrysler and dropped everything off at a friends to rebuild but the problem is that the kit is slightly different than the carb...my carb has 2 plungers inside, one for the accelerator pump and I am not sure what the other plunger does and the gaskets are different because the body is slightly different to allow for the other plunger. I suspect it has alot to due with the fluid drive but I am not sure....does anyone know what Kit I need and the best place to get one

If you find out let me know. I had a semi-used one from Carquest that didn't have a replacement for the second plunger and the one from Andy Bernbaum didn't have it either. So hopefully that NAPA one will do the trick, just know the Carquest and Andy B's lack the extra plunger replacement.

I think the second plunger is supposed to work as a dash pot for a delayed return to idle. It's connected to the linkage and tries to depress the plunger when returning to idle. The plunder goes into a blind cylinder and doesn't pump the gas anywhere. My truck has the same thing, and it also has Fluid Drive.

I think I got my rebuild kit from Roberts Motor Parts. I didn't even realize at the time that this was different from "normal" carbs. The kit must have had all the necessary parts.

I do believe its written vertically along the side of the carb. If you have the original Carter carb in there its:

E7L4 for the six cylinder

E7J4 for the eight cylinder

If its a different carb I haven't got a clue! Good luck.

BTW, are you rebuilding it yourself? They really aren't that bad to do. I put a little gasket filler on each side of the gaskets to make sure there weren't any leaks, and so far no leaks! Also, be careful with your anti-stall coil, thin wire can break easy!

I have the big 3" Carter book with most of the tech sheets for the 1955 and older carbs. If you send me an email with the number and can wait a few days, I will take a photo of the page and email it back.

some progress today thanks to all the help from this forum....the number was exactly where it was supposed to be and it is E7L4 and the first kit will work in my other carbs their #'s are D6A2 and D6H2

I have dissassembled the D6H2 as it appeared to be the most saveable now I have more questions...the carb has been painted at some time and I was thinking about soaking it in thinners or paint remover before I rebuild it does anyone see a problem with this?

The paint thinner idea worked good and I have the 1st carb cleaned/freed up and mostly rebuilt but of coarse there has to be a problem.

I have broken off a screw that holds the throttle plate on the throttle shaft and the 2 screws that hold the choke plate on the choke shaft were not right (wood screws).

I don't think that it will be that hard to get the broken screw out but where in the world would a guy find replacement brass screws that size?

...the best thing i have done for carb rebuilding and parts...

go on ebay or.? and buy up a few beater carbs for 10 bucks or so. basically ANY one will do, as they are 98% the same, ..the D6h1 or 2 is most common for the plymouths.

basic carb differences can be,

choke type and location.

throttle size opening ply/desoto/chrys.

various lever designs for linkage.

fluid drive models.

but even so important parts ALL interchange...like the little screws you have lost.

I will have to try to get them out of the old parts carb that I have here.

Joe it looks like that place might have them but I am not sure of what size they are and I would hate to get 100 of the wrong size brass screw that I will never use..... however if I did luck out and get the right size I could keep the whole forum supplied with them for years to come.

Success...I was able to salvage the screws out of a junk carb that I had laying around and the carb is pretty much back together. another couple questions that I have is should there be any spring tension (from the plunger) on the throttle control rod without the gas pedal being depressed???

Anyone have detailed pics of a D6H2 carb? I want to make sure I have all the brackets and linkages right as I made 1 carb out of 2 and they are a little different...I think for the automatic choke.

Bernbaums does sell the dashpot plunger for the fluid drive cars, you have to ask them for it, it's not in the catalog
