Just curious to know if anyone has been watching Barrett-Jackson. To me most of the cars are over-restored and over-priced. I'm betting in most cases you can find a similar car elsewhere that is 90% as good as those on B-J and pay half as much. I guess if you have the money, you can do what you want with it but to me the auction epitomizes the old saying that some people have "more money than sense". I'm guessing that most of us on this forum with their imperfect cars have a lot more fun with them.

I agree with Robert, the people there have a lot more money thah they have sense. The most out of whack deal I saw was a 1932 Ford roadster, that went for $120,000.00, I know that you can buy a real nice one for about 15,000 to 20,000, talk about riddicolous. Tony C

I guess if you have the money and you really want a car then you will pay anything to get it. Some of those people have so much money, know very little about the cars but know what they want and will pay anything to get it because they dont have the knowledge to build it theirselves or know what looks good or what they want to have someone build it for them. Also lots of those cars are museum cars or cars that are completely original without a part changed on them because they sat in some grandmothers garage and was never driven. As for me, I will stick to buying a car that I can drive wherever I want and not have to worry about chipping the paint on the "chassis" or scratching a fender. Some of these cars have a nicer frame or chassis than the outside of my 66 F100. :P

The buyer of the 32 was Ted Waitt, CEO of Gateway. I know his brother. Many people want to be seen buying. It is entertaining , I guess. If I had that sort of dough I would pay someone to bid for me or do it by phone. A few of the Desotos brought some very high dollar. The announcers on stage get very tiresome after awhile. They used to have a British ex-race car driver, Alan somthing who was a nice counterpont to the others. Dream on I guess. I can watch with the sound off like I do with football games. Eric

Well if ya got more money than brains, I guess going to BJ is like any other high visability event that those folks go to. If you think about it you could go to Vegas, see a couple of high priced shows, spend some time in the casino, drop 150K and not have anything to show for it, or you can go to the auction, rub shoulders with other high rollers, and celebritues, make a few bids, maybe get your mug on TV, drop 150K and have something to drive home and play with for a while, if you don't like it you can sell it get most of your money back, and still have had the experience.

keep in mind these people who bid have alot of sense in other areas of life or they might not be rich. they want to spend more on these cars because you and i can't, and to play with their other rich freinds that are there. i work out in the hamptons on long island and i know how rich people think.they will go to an eating establishment and pay $15.00 for a tunafish sandwich just so they don't have to sit with the common folk like me. thats why they go to barrett jackson. dennis

captden29 has a point there. I guess it's like a bragging rights thing because if you watch it they sometimes will get to 85,000 bucks and then you get one guy that goes to 90,000 and everyone goes crazy to get them to try and bust 100,000 and one rich guy will just do it to get everyone to clap and he get's his 2 minutes of fame on TV and feel like he is the king of the world for 5 minutes and then he's gone. I have also seen and know of bad deals gone wrong on that show. One of my friends in our local rod/truck club knows some guys on there that he sold a car to (a mopar if I remember correctly, it was a muscle car) and the guy that bought it got fake title and VIN and such and said it was some rare car. The guy got away with it for a while but not for long. :D That's all I can remember of the story since it was long and in too great of detail for anyone to remember haha.

I also hear that they bring out alcohol to all the bidders the night before, just to help their mind "wonder" and want to just bid more. ;)

Anyone here got any stories they know about BJ, any "behind the scenes" ones?

Yea but its grilled Ahi tuna on hand formed artisian bread, over jullienned Belgium endive, topped with roasted plum tomatoes garnished with garlic and ginger aoli, assembled table side by an indentured chef's apprentice, on an imported antique tea trolley.
