47heaven Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 You may recall a few months back I posted a thread regarding some hissing sound coming from my car. I thought it might have been the clutch, and it was a "come and go" kind of sound...never showing up when I was trying to get the mechanic to hear it. Well, over the past couple weeks it has become more common and I noticed that it was a sound that had kind of a squeeking/rubbing sound like metal on metal coming right out from underneath me. The sound seems to slow down when I come to a stop and it also stops, as well. I discovered that it was the e-brake. Yes, it was disengauged, but when I would pull it up a little, the sound would change tone. Also, it also makes kind of a clicking sound as I coast down the alley, like something is loose. I recall the mechanic telling me sometime back that the e-brake was running out of shoe. Has anyone had this happen before or familiar with it? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Sounds like maybe rivets of worn shoe dragging on the hub against which they tighten. Just like a regular brake shoe on a wheel. The e-brake can be relined. [/img] Quote

greg g Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 There are also two adjusters on them to keep them centered around the drum. It's not a big deal to remove and should be easy to reline. Check you local businesses for a shop that does trucks and other commercial vehicles. They can rivet or bond on new material, and with the band properly asjusted shuold give you a long service life. JIPJOBXX Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Before I fixed my universal on my Dodge that noise would come and go also. After I fixed the trunnion on the universal shaft from not moving that noise stopped. I guess my shaft was so out of alignment that it just would touch that brake shoe area only when there was no power on the shaft only coasting. Quote

MacGyver Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 I have to agree with the worn lining and dragging rivet theory. The same noise came from mine. When I first got my car (11yrs ago) It was very worn and consequently adjusted too tightly by in order to compensate. One evening the darn thing got so hot it started some grease in the area on fire. Luckily there was a man in his yard that saw the flames as I was driving, he flagged me down and we put out the fire in time. Anywho, I had the brake re-lined at a local shop and all is well... I guess that even helped with grease removal since it had been all but burned away. Quote

Here's a link to an ebay ad for a reproduction of that book by Irv Bishko. They are also offered by other sellers. Sometime an actual original comes up. BobT-47P15 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 The book on the lower right is probably the best repair manual for a P15. Followed by the red and grey on the left. Top is the parts manual. The repair manuals show different things and explain how to diagnose and repair certain problems. Do not cover every thing that can go wrong. I think they are reproduced as well. BobT-47P15 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 The Chiltons and Motors manuals are also good. They go into pretty good detail about certain things. I've had the Chiltons for a long time. Watched for a while and got a good buy on the Motors on ebay. They both cover most makes of cars. Quote
