truck721 Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 Currently have a 1950 two door up for some work in my shop. I would love to upgrade the plymouth with an overdrive unit. I need as much info as I can get about the overdrive upgrades, transmission changes, or any of you who can extend links to me to make this happen. In addition I noticed several of you indicating a change to the rear end may be easier. Once again, can members help me with finding what I need to make this happen. Need to get the parts shortly and get to work on the change. Any help would be great. New to this site and love all the advice. Floyd Quote

Jim Yergin Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 A good place to start would be Blueskies' web site and his section on installing an O/D in his '50. http://www.50plymouth.com/ Jim Yergin Quote
claybill Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 just remember that you CANNOT just leave your car in gear when you park and expect it to hold....O/D is a 100% emergency brake system. bill Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 just remember that you CANNOT just leave your car in gear when you park and expect it to hold....O/D is a 100% emergency brake system.bill ???????? My car will hold in gear with no problem with my T-5 overdrive transmission. Quote
Captain Neon Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 just remember that you CANNOT just leave your car in gear when you park and expect it to hold....O/D is a 100% emergency brake system.bill You are thinking of the Dodge Fluid Drive. An R-10 in standard first gear works the same as the standard transmission. Unless you only drive in Kansas and Nebraska, I recommend swapping your factory transmission for an R-10 Borg-Warner O/D. They bolt right in. The only modification that I am aware of is connecting the speedometer cable. Had I had access to a rebuilt R-10 last year, I would have made the swap myself last spring. Due to time constraints, I chose to have my factory transmission rebuilt when it went out. I considered swapping out my rear, but after spending a year in Colorado and now living in Missouri's Green Hills, I am glad to have my granny low rear-end when taking off from a stoplight on a hill. claybill Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 my mistake obviously..glad i re-read tis thread. i had an O/D in my 41 and it seemed always to float away when parked in gear..so i took it out.! bill Quote
Young Ed Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Bill I believe the OD will do that if you leave it engaged. Quote
blueskies Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 just remember that you CANNOT just leave your car in gear when you park and expect it to hold....O/D is a 100% emergency brake system.bill Bill I believe the OD will do that if you leave it engaged. Bill is right... I had my car roll away once... If the lockout cable is left in, the transmission can freewheel, and it will roll in one direction. I hardly ever pull my lockout cable out, and rely on the parking brake to keep the car where I parked it. If I have to park on a steep hill, I will pull the lockout cable out just for good measure and peace of mind. Pete Quote
littleman Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Reverting back to my previous statement, I leave mine all the time. Probably the difference is the fact that my OD is hot wired(toggle switched) When I park with cable in and soleniod turned off, car does not move. Yes it is an R10, switched hot wired to solenoid, and a cable. When driving in these positions, yes it does freewheel. Why it gear locks when parked. ??? I am not a trans mechanic or engineer, and bought this OD from a trusted rebuilder out here. Oh, and I have never had it roll away. AL Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 just remember that you CANNOT just leave your car in gear when you park and expect it to hold....O/D is a 100% emergency brake system.bill The car can only roll away on you in gear with OD handle pushed in! OD handle really should always be pulled out to lock out the free wheeling part of the trans when parking the car at the end of a trip. The car will not roll away if this is done when left in 1st or reverse. Should still always use the E-brake. Bob Quote
