Harvey Tank Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 HI All. I finally got a 504 radio for my project 50 PLY P20, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to mount the thing. is there bracketts that should have come with the radio? on my car ther is no sign as to where they would mount. can someone post a photo or something showing the mounts? Thanks Quote
randroid Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 Ruth, As often as not the front is held in place by nuts under the knobs. Pull the knobs off, unscrew the nuts, slip the threaded knob studs through the holes in the dash from the rear, reinstall the nuts, push the knobs back on and the front will be secure. The rear is generally held in place by a strap hanging down from a stud on the inside of the dash. This is commonly replaced by a metal strap with a lot of holes in it called 'plumber's tape', and you can find it cheap at any hardware store. Install the radio after the plumber's tape is already dangling securely in place and ready to support the lion's share of the weight because the little nuts on the knobs won't hold the radio in place by themselves. It's a job that's simple to do yet difficult for me to explain this early in my day. It should become obvious once you find the stud inside the dash and a matching stud on the back of the radio. -Randy Quote
Young Ed Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 The radio as an assembly is held in with 4 screws from the front and I belive more underneath. I know its necessary to remove the heater control to install or remove the radio. If your car happens to have the speaker grill/radio face piece with no radio installed in it then following what Randy posted should get er done Quote
dirty dan Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I've got the same issue on a 602 for my '46. Does anyone have pitures of the mounting for the 602 radio? That sucker is much too heavy to be held by knob nuts and a single strap to the back. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Nope thats all that holds the p15 radios. 2 nuts on the front and a brace from the back of the radio to the bar that holds the cowl vent lever etc Quote

Young Ed Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Not handy but I can take one for you after work. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Here's a picture from the parts manual of the radio and it's mounting hardware. On a P15, that L shaped bracket attaches to the stud on the rear end of the radio, then to the support bracket for the cowl vent. Quote
Don Jordan Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I truly hope this doesn't sound too stupid... can you get any speaker at Radio Shack or Best Buy and have it work or does it take something special. Right now my radio is just for show to fill in the space but it would be neat if I could get it working so I could pick up some of the songs from the 40s and 50s. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 convert it and pickup CD's of the 40-50's you be less didappointed...lol Quote

A Radio Shack speaker will work just fine. When I cleverly put a screwdriver through the cone of the original speaker in my 47 , I got a Radio Shack speaker, wired it up and it worked perfectly. BobT-47P15 Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I have my radio in place, not working for a long time.....and have put an aftermarket modern speaker behind the dash. Have been hooking it up to my boom box which sits in the back floor. Really need a better system. Will just have to work with it when have time and in the mood. I get more noise with the top down than if it were a closed car. Quote
