mikesinky Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 i need to know a good way to check my amp guage i had the 6 volt gen. rebuilt but the needle isnt moving how can i check to see if its charging ....thanks Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Did you polarize the generator after you installed it? Quote
greg g Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Does the amp gauge move to the negative when you put the headlights on or step on the brake with the ign off??? Or you can do a simple test of generator output as follows: run the car at a high idle, with a jumper wire temporarily ground the fiel post of the genny, the amp gauge should show fully charge. polorize first. mikesinky Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Posted April 29, 2009 no i didnt polorize it but i will now thanks...i cant turn the lights or anything on right now. i just started it up after the rebuild making sure no leaks and running good before it put the front clip back on. everything sounded and ran good just have to get the gen. to working. i replaced all the wiring and just wanted to make sure everything is working before i put it back together Quote
WatchingWolf Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Only thing I still buy at Harbor Freight is the digital multimeters they always have on sale for $1.99 or $2.99. Perfect for testing this kind of stuff and if they go poof (and they will), just grab another. I buy a couple at a time. Saved my good Fluke a number of times. Quote
adam_knox Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Did you polarize the generator after you installed it? Hey Don, I think you might have solved my dilemma! My generator wasn't pumping out quite high enough of a voltage after I replaced the brushes and cleaned off the armature. The only thing I couldn't figure out how to do was to flash the generator. Can't wait to pull it out of the garage and give it a zap! Quote

mikesinky Posted May 4, 2009 Author Report Posted May 4, 2009 i done the polarizing and still nothing does the guages have to be grounded or anything. i'm thinking where i painted the cab and everything it might not be getting a good ground, but the guages have insulators around the screw heads and guages. Plymouthy Adams Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 you ground that and there is going to be some serious smoke... have you tried to see if there is voltage being put out by the generator..or for that matter do you have a clip on amp meter...could be you have a damaged meter.. get some external test meters on the car..you will eliminate a lot of guessing...
