By the way, 53-54 rear axles have a different number of splines than earlier models. Wish those were nearby, I need one replacement axle, one of mine has a slight wobble. Quote

I have read that the 3.54 was available in the 54 Plymouth BUT only with the automatic transmission and the larger 230 engine setup. The standard shift was still standard 218 and 3 on tree, in other words just a carry forward. I cannot state this as 100%..only what I have read...this is according to my service manual...if you luck into a Hy-drive unit..this is supposed to be stock with 3.73 ratio. Quote
AJ Johnson Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 My 54 Dodge, six cylinder, 3 speed has 3.9 gears in the rear. It goes ok at Texas highway speeds. But, I would like to find a different ratio though. If I run across a cheap Chevy S10 rear (3.42 gears & disc brakes) I may go that route. Seems like a easier route than a new transmission. AJ Quote

Seems like a easier route than a new transmission. Actually installing the Asche overdrive( actually 6 speed forward- yes 6) is In my experience easier than changing the rear end. Absolutely no modifications- except adding wiring and cable. It is a true bolt in. Now ( I have changed 3) can remove and install a transmission an 2 to 3 hours tops. The standard overdrive is absolutely , in my opinion, the easiest and best way to go. I have done S-10 in an A model - great but a lot of adaptations. newer rear ends in A models and other Fords 4 speed ford truck in 48 ford etc. The Asche overdrive and high speed second and all switches wiring etc is about 1500. Might seem pricey but I do not think you will find anyone that regretted going this route. I am going to install as set of 3.55 gears in a car because I have never done it and want to do it.
