So I need a new windshield. Local glass co. quoted $700   and that is with me supplying the gasket which I bought.

Is this even in the right ballpark?

Is it really that tough to do it myself if I have them cut the glass from the original template?

The corner windows would scare me but with the divider bar and all I am not sure how tough this one really is. Let me know.

I think you're being raped... without lube

I didn't spend that much for all new flat glass and install of all but the door glass. They did, however, tell me that if I had them made out of clear glass that it would be pretty costly because I'd have to buy 4 full sheets. Each sheet has 2 DOT etch marks and there has to be one on each piece they cut. Since I needed them to cut 7 pieces it would take 8 sheets. However, if I used the green tint glass they would be able to use scraps left over from other jobs. When they cut glass for our construction equipment they don't have to have the DOT etching on it. But for auto glass they can't sell it without it. So I let them cut my 7 pieces from tinted glass at a much reduced cost. I was worried that the clear glass of the rear corner windows would stand out against the green tint of the other glass, but you can't tell unless you really study it.

I installed my own glass, and I'd have to say the windshield wasn't too bad. Time consuming, but not too difficult. It would definitely help to have a second set of hands, since it's a bit awkward moving it into position on the truck once you have both panes in the rubber. I did it by myself though, and it was much easier than getting the rear windows in for me.

My old windshield was fine, so I didn't buy a new one. I did however buy new door windows and that cost me around $200 for all 4 pieces. I couldn't imagine the windshield glass costing much more.

I paid less that $50 for the two windshield halves about 8 yrs ago from a commercial glass shop. He even installed them for me using my new gasket. Shop around I think you should be able to get the windshield done for far less than what was quoted. It took 2 guys that knew what they were doing less than 20 minutes to install both halves. I took them an old windsheild to use as a pattern. Had a door window made a couple of years ago-no vent window cost $27.00 and did the install myself. Mike

the front windsheild is flat panels, easy as pie to get cut and install yourself, now...the rear half of the cab is the bitch that will get you for $700.

I'm fixing to have mine done, I'm damn tired of wrestling with them and failing miserably at it. It's way obvious to me that I'm gonna have to pay someone to install them for me, and I HATE that fact.

good info, thanks.

Like you, I have all the rear glass,

On my doors, the drivers side window is glass, the drivers vent is plexi, on the passenger side, the window is plexi and the vent is original glass, I will be buying the front and correct side pieces in a week or so, now I have more questions and research to do.

oh yeah, I broke the flat rear glass in an attempt, so I have to buy that one too....

I don't know how true this is, but when the guy did my windshields he told me not to mess with the rear window glass when it came time to replace it. He said he'd make a new one as the old one would probably be too brittle to reinstall. Mike

Your side glass is all flat glass, so if you have one side it can be used as a template for the other. Any glass shop should be able to duplicate a new one from the old one. If the windshield is two pieces, the same deal applies, as one side it sht mirror image of the other.

Have you ever noticed that auto glass is like a lot of other stuff, tinted is cheaper than clear, fat free is more than regular, water is more expensive than soda, leaded when still sold was cheaper thn unleaded. high sodium foods are cheaper than lowsodium (oops sorry I seem to be channeling Any Rooney this morning)

I just paid $90 for the 2 front windsheild peices, and had my wife and a neighbor hold the glass in place (both pieces) while I installed them.........not that hard, I think a new door glass was about $45 also

I just got a quote for a door glass on my truck. Prices ranged from $175 - $190 between 3 shops!!!! That included labor and new channel and window sweep. Man , prices sure have gone up since I had that done before. I get tired of hearing myself cuss so I'll have them do it.

EDIT....Just got back from the shop with the low bid of $175 and to my surprise it's only going to be $120. Yahoo !

okies, I tried and tried again with the rear curved glass from the inside....admittedly, I almost got one in, but there was no way it would seat all the way down, had almost 3 sides settled in, the 4th side to settle was no bueno today, actually had 1.5 real world hours fumbling and cussing again, on ONE corner.

I found a glass guy and am going to pay him for all the freakin work, makes me mad as hell to give up and hand it off.

time is money and I am tired of wasting time and not accomplishing a damn thing but being greasy, slippery, sweaty and pissed.
