I been searching for a decal for the serial # plate on my 40... Not sure if they are the same as the post war type.. Does any body know if they make a decal to make it look good... I do not want to put a silk screen one on ... I saw at some car auction the DMV is giving restorers a hard time when they drill out the original rivets and put a new one in .. If someone has a repro or knows who sells them or can fax me a photo copy of one .. My sign shop can make the decal..Thanks ..

Do you have a picture of what you are looking for? I ask because on my '41 P12 the serial number is stamped or punched on a thin strip of metal attached to the front passenger door post. There is no silk screening or decal that would work on my car for the serial number.

on my P7 the serial number is debossed (pressed from behind) into a tag on the firewall. I reproduced a bunch of the body tags fro dodge and plymouth....the red ones with the half circle ends that go on the firewall.

Are you sure that is not the body number on the firewall? For 1930-42 Plymouths the serial number should be on the front passenger (right) side door hinge post.

And, by the way, my 1933 serial number plate has, barely visible through several layers of paint, the outline of text that says "Serial Number". The general form and style look the same as on later cars. Since the text is visible I figure that it is slightly raised from the base metal on the plate. The numbers themselves are stamped into the metal tag.

i guess that was the body number on the firewall and not the serial...oops.

ANyway...here is a foto of the repros I made..i've got abunch of them left...Dodge and Plymouth....they are HEAVY DUTY mylar adhesive and go over the existing clean tag. The are see through so they need a clean metal tag behind them to look perfect. You can also make a new same shape tag and spray paint it silver metal for a great result too. Mine is painted under the mylar repro. here's mine

If those are the metallic print tags I've heard of..they scratch easily and with time the printing fades away...That's why I came up with the ones I put on my car and all my friends cars...they do not fade or scratch off. I also made some heater box tags...

CLAYBILL - Do you have any pics of it? What kind of printing i s used on your tag may I ask? Or do you know if they scratch easily? If not I'll look into getting one to see how they were made...thanks

It seems all the "body number" tags I see are painted same color as the

car/firewall. They just kinda blend in.

However, the painted up one looks kinda snappy.....just probably not

as original.

yeah...it wasn't originally red...but I like it. Kinda looks neat next to the other red tag.

I honestly don't think this applies to someone that intends to make his current worn illegible VIN now legible. This law applies to laundering stolen vehicles and defrauding someone through actually changing a VIN. To take a VIN tag from one's own vehicle and transfer the same numbers onto a new plate is not a crime. I think one stands to get in much more trouble to have the VIN plate missing all together than to replace a missing or severely damaged (i.e. illegible) unit.

I think the ID number tag on the left door post (on a 47 P15) originally had

the stamped-in numbers set in a black field, with a narrow grey

(metal color) border, then a narrow black border around that. Or,

something close to that. Mine is pretty much worn off and the entire

tag appears metal grey. I did spray it with a clear coating at one time

just to make it look better.

Are the tags on door posts attached with rivets or small screws?

I'm thinking mine had screws.

IIRC the serial number plate on my 1933 is held on with rivets.

The thing is almost illegible at present due to body color paint that covers it. So it has already been "defaced" to a certain extent. And while the letter of the law might imply I should not further modify it, it would seem that removing the paint paint that obscures the numbers would be "restoration" rather than "defacement" or "modification".

However removing the body color paint layers will almost certainly remove the original black text that said "Serial Number". For that reason the recent posting on water decals has raised my curiosity.

I suppose it would be possible to remove the paint and apply a decal with the tag affixed to the door hinge post. That would keep me from violating any rules about removing it. It would, however, make the job more difficult.

Seems As I thought ... mixed reactions on this subject... heres the options..

1) leave alone .. no restoration...

2)clean off old paint and appy decal

3)take out rivits and orginal plate put in glove box (or with title safe away)

apply new repro serial plate and new rivits...

Thanks for the information given and your thoughts...DANiel

A couple of people talk about finding reproduction serial number plates. That would be the black paint with gray (metal) with a cars serial number that is riveted onto the drivers side door pillar between the hinges.

Mine is seeing corrosion. I would like to take the original off and put one one that can be read.

Where did folks get that reproduction plate?

Nice! Where did you get the decal?

What do you mean when you write you applied it with two pieces of tape?

All you have to do is buy a re-pro serial plate... Which I did, then bring it to your sign shop.. He can transfer the metal plate to Mylar clear sheets.. Then you have to cut the decal to fit , on my first try I did not use the tape I mention and it was hard to center, you have to remove the decal from the sheet and its like fly paper! so I used clear tape and put the strips by the holes and it was easy to line up and install!. Anyone can make them and do it! I am not sure if there is a interest for me to sell them Or I do not know IF I could sell them.. (maybe copyrighted?) But for my own use as you can see ... Looks good. In the post by Bob on the red Plymouth tag . What do the letters M.DEF M.IND RGTRDA stand for ? Are they english ? OK I'm guessing that it means trade mark registered , perhaps in spanish .
